Electricity

Intro to the Carbon Cycle

In Earth Science this year, we're going to be talking a lot about climate change and the carbon cycle. Take a minute to read the article/video linked below and answer the reflection question.

DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity

Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon Cycle

Climate change is occurring because of a phenomenon that is also a very basic chemical reaction. When fossil fuels burn, carbon dioxide is produced. Usually, this reaction balances out as carbon dioxide is then used during photosynthesis. However, the amount of carbon being produced currently, due to our overuse of fossil fuels, is tipping this delicate balance. We'll talk more about the effects later on...in the meantime let's learn about how to reduce the ways WE start chemical reactions that create carbon. Use the link below to measure your carbon footprint.

Explore My Area

Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 200 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

People eat meat in many countries for different reasons; religion, culture, and like in America- because it’s fatty and tastes good (to most people). Eating more meat means killing more animals, but we needs those animals. And meat is bad for us too, for our hearts mostly. Scientists have found that eating a plant-based diet lowers cardiovascular risks.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Human Activity as Renewable Energy
What is one way we can harness human activity as a power source? If you had unlimited skills and resources---what type of product would you invent that uses human power as an energy source?

One way we can harness human activity as a power source is a ‘windup’ phone, where you turn the handle on the phone to power it.

If I could invent something that uses human power as an energy source, I’d make it for when people are sitting down. We do it a lot, so why not produce energy while we do. It could be foot pedals, so while your sitting looking at your laptop or something, you could be powering it and getting excerise.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    alex iguchi's avatar
    alex iguchi 3/24/2021 8:20 AM
I can help by donating to organizations that block drainage canals and stop water levels from dropping farther, thus protecting and fixing our peatlands. I can also help by telling people about the peatlands and raising awareness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Intro to the Carbon Cycle
    1. Where does carbon originate? 2. How is carbon released? 3. Where does carbon go once it's released? 4. What is the connection between carbon change, fossil fuel use, and the carbon cycle?

    alex iguchi's avatar
    alex iguchi 1/18/2021 8:11 AM
    1. the earth, its always been here
    2. carbon is released when living things breathe it out
    3. it goes into the atmosphere and then back down to organisms on earth
    4. dead organisms breakdown and become fossil fuel, which give off co2, the co2 goes into our atmosphere and then back down for organisms on earth
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    alex iguchi 1/12/2021 7:13 AM
Other things I can do to reduce my carbon footprint are use less gasoline and/or charge phones or other electronics less.

      Great! 👍
Are you able to find out your carbon footprint? If not that's fine.

What's one way you can either offset or limit the amount of carbon you are producing?

I can walk/bike/skateboard/etc instead of riding in cars or CO2 producing vehicles when possible.
