REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Earlie Ingle 12/11/2020 5:36 PMI feel helpless, but I know that there's people out there actively working to fix environmental challenges. That makes me feel hopeful. I just try to do whatever I can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Earlie Ingle 12/09/2020 6:36 PMI don’t eat much meat-- I stick to fruit. I eat lots of fruit. It’s pretty much all I eat until dinner (the only real meal of the day-- we just snack or fast for the first bit.). At dinner, though, we almost always eat meat. Not much, but still. We could stop eating meat so much-- stick to one or two times a week. I don’t drink coffee or eat chocolate, but the other two people in my house do (one drinks coffee and eats chocolate, the other just eats chocolate. I could try and get them to tone it down. We can start looking for the Rainforest Alliance Certification when shopping. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Earlie Ingle 12/09/2020 4:29 PMI'll know better than to buy anything that I won't be able to use. Buy only what I need and things that are still good enough to spend money on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Earlie Ingle 11/29/2020 2:52 PMIn Asheville (downtown, specifically), there's some taller buildings, so that could be good.
I've seen stuff about putting spinney things that make energy where the vehicles are moving fast (highways)-- using the air they push to make energy would be smart.
That's more obvious placement, but I wonder if micro turbines could be installed at the tops of mountains. There's Max Patch, Big Bald-- really any of the super windy ones. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Earlie Ingle 11/29/2020 12:50 PMI'd heard of biomass technology before this challenge, but I never knew what it was. I was surprised to learn that biomass energy is a bridge-- it is a part of the plan to transition the world's energy use to renewable energy, rather than fossil-fuel power. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Earlie Ingle 11/27/2020 2:56 PMI can introduce this new idea to the people around me who have the resources (money) to invest in a geothermal energy system. I, personally, know that I don't have the money to make this investment, so that's too bad.
