Greg Janowick 5/10/2021 7:04 AMReducing animal byproducts has been easier than expected. My concern and a typical concern for people going vegan is lack of protein in their diet but with proper research and food selection I've still been able to reach ~75g of protein via nuts, pasta, and supplements.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?
Greg Janowick 4/22/2021 3:49 PMOne aspect of regenerative agriculture is phasing out monocultures in farming and beginning to implement polycultures. Tennessee is guilty of mass monocultures across the state in large soybean, corn, and cotton. Improving into polyculture would have a positive impact on the biodiversity as well as the richness of the soil. -
Greg Janowick 4/22/2021 3:45 PMOne Time Challenge Regenerative Agriculture
Regenerative agriculture is the same concept as zero energy buildings in that the means of agricultural production have a net positive or no negative impact on the environment. While agriculture has a significant negative impact on the environment, a total of ~12% of GHG emmissions come from agriculture (Bruno et al.) the systems of regenerative agriculture could have a massive imact on reducing the quantity of emmissions. While the term regenerative agriculture varies, all definitions typically include a focus on improving watersheds and introducing more polyculture to farming. Not only does this have an environmental impact on the direct surrounding area, but also global effects as it would lower total GHG emmissions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Greg Janowick 4/22/2021 11:25 AMPeople in more affluent countries have more access to meat because the cost of meat production is much higher than a plant production. As incomes grow so does the rate of meat consumption and as the rate of meat consumption grows the health risks to eating too much meat become apparent; Heart disease, diabetes, and select cancers are all side effects of excess meat consumption. Meat production also has an adverse effect on the climate for a variety of reasons. Firstly it takes 441 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef due to the water it takes to feed cattle. GHG emmissions also see a rise when more meat it consumed because cattle produces a significant amount of methane, land is cleared for space, and transportation of meat production is increased.
