James Jeon 4/06/2021 8:03 PMI really enjoyed this ECO challenge! The three things I will continue from the ECOChallenge is to be more mindful at and off the dinner table. I will make more of an effort to eat less meat and reduce my plate size. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
James Jeon 4/06/2021 8:00 PMRicher countries eat more meat because they have more access and money to buy it. I know that eating a lot of meat can be damaging to your body, especially for older people. The production of meat is very cruel to animals but also to the people that work in the industry. In the U.S. most workers at a slaughter house and in the meat packing industry are immigrants that are subjected to work for little pay and in very harsh conditions! I want to do a better job of consuming less meat and I will work on that. The consumption of meat is one of the most environmentally polluting thing we do that's a part of our everyday life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go by BikeHow does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?
James Jeon 4/06/2021 7:54 PMI feel much more alive when I bike through the city than I do sitting in my car. Riding my bicycle allow me to stop or pull over more easily than I can with a car, it allows me to see more of L.A. for what it is (can be bad or good), and it gives me a sense of ease that I am not polluting our already very polluted air for my regular visits to the park or my grandmothers. I really wish that L.A. can make bicycling more of an incentive as studies find that most people in L.A. drive to get somewhere that is less than 5miles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
James Jeon 4/06/2021 7:47 PMBeing outside brings more awareness to what I am doing and to my thoughts as there are less distractions from my computer or my phone. I thrive outdoors, especially in a natural area but unfortunately L.A. is one of the most park deprived city in the U.S. Even after knowing all the issues L.A. has, when I step outside of my home I feel much better. I have to make an effort to spend my time outdoors at least for a couple of hours so that I can sustain my mental and physical health. -
James Jeon 4/06/2021 1:53 PMLast day of the ECO challenge! I'll spend some time learning through the ECO challenge dashboard to earn some last minute points! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
James Jeon 4/04/2021 10:09 PMI can advocate for better public transportation systems by supporting laws and measures for improving the system. Public transportation in L.A. has such a bad reputation and most people I know dare not to take it because it is inefficient and can be dangerous/dirty. Metro has to do a better job serving people a means of transportation but as well as making the trains/buses/subways are safe and clean! -
James Jeon 4/03/2021 11:29 PMI ate oatmeal this morning, and purposefully skipped my favorite ingredient fried egg to the meal to make it vegan! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
James Jeon 4/03/2021 11:26 PMI wrote a blog about the history of women's rights in U.S. and promoted women leading in business successfully! Check out my blog post on Paylocity under the Sustainability channel. -
James Jeon 4/03/2021 11:24 PMSo one of my ECO challenges I created for myself is to pick up litter (up to 5 pieces a day) and what I've noticed is that a very common type of waste I find are caps! Caps from plastic bottles but also lids from coffee cups. Interestingly, our caps from production presents challenges to recycle because of the metal spring and that we end up recycling too many instead of it instead of actually using them on the product (working to fix this). I will work on trying to find better alternatives to caps are littered to easily and that they are difficult to recycle. -
James Jeon 3/31/2021 9:25 PMOnly one more week left! I will commit to spending at least a hour learning and discovering more about new environmental fields through the ECO challenge dashboard. I will also try to eat more vegan meals (proving to be difficult!), eat more veggies and fruits (also difficult), and spend more time eating mindfully!
