REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Hannah Johnke 4/11/2023 1:11 PMI found the abalone being on the best choice list interesting. I like the layout of the website and what we can look out for. I'm just unsure of where we might find these fish in stores or at restaurants-
Jojo Cook 4/13/2023 9:33 AMIt can be difficult to navigate choices in stores, but looking for certain verified certification labels and asking questions of restaurants/stores when you can is the best start. Most if not all the abalone sold in stores (locally) comes from farmed sources (partially because free diving is currently banned for a couple years). There's actually a really big abalone farm under the fisherman's wharf here in Monterey, and those farmers not only provide a good portion of the abalone steaks to local restaurants, they are also some of the only people with a permit to collect kelp from the bay!
