I will spend at least 60 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Today at my place of work, I learned that the cardboard boxes that we discard are shipped to a warehouse in Atlanta where they are recycled. In addition the plastic wrap that is used in some of the boxes is also all recycled. It made me feel a lot better about discarding the items at work, because now I know that a portion of them are getting recycled. However the downside is, that if there is any wetness to the boxes or plastic then it must be thrown away because it can't be recycled at that point, which I believe we could work to find some way to recycle them as well.

Working at a grocery store it is truly eye opening seeing how much waste goes on behind the scenes. Normally as a shopper you have consumer waste that you can recycle and deal with yourself. However you don't see all the waste that went into putting that product on the shelf. The produce that I work with all comes in bulky cardboard packaging which comes on pallets. And inside the cardboard packaging all the produce is wrapped with plastic or has more card board or paper holding it in place. As well as all the shipping packaging it comes in, the food then comes in its own packaging boxes inside the other boxes sometimes. All of this waste is so unnecessary and it really shows you how much waste there is behind the scenes.

This challenge has gotten much easier over time, the only difficulties is at my place of work they don't recycle everything that is possible due to convenience. And it is very frustrating to see how much is wasted that could be recycled. Also at home we have to hire a private vendor to come pick up our recyclables because it is not something that is provided by the city which is also very frustrating because this means not everyone can recycle because they can't pay for the vendor to come get it.

How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

The foods we typically eat every day are impacting deforestation all around the world every single day. If we eat any foods with palm oil in it, we are helping impact the deforestation of African tropical jungles in which palm trees thrive. This also impacts biodiversity loss by taking away plants and animals homes, due to palm oil plantations for example palm oil fields have taken away 90% of orangutan habitats. If you eat meat, dairy and eggs then your diet is contributing to deforestation, not directly but for animal feed. Soy bean farms are contributing for 70% of all animal feed and around 33% of all land on Earth is used for growing livestock feed. This has devastated the Amazon Rain forest as thousands of acres are torn down everyday to keep up with this unsustainable practice. In order to combat this we must change our diets as a society. I will do this by cutting back on the amount meat, dairy, and egg products I eat, also I consciously make an effort to make sure I don't buy products that use palm oil. Lastly, I will be an advocate for people that are uneducated on this subject in making sure they know how their diets impact deforestation all around the world.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I can incorporate these into my life by reducing the amount of single use plastics that I use, a big way I can do this is by reducing the amount of fast food that I eat, because the majority of single use plastics or garbage I create is from fast food waste. Also I can reuse garbage, instead of throwing away plastic bottles or paper cups I can re fill them, or I can use a washable plastic cup to reduce my waste. I can refuse to use single use plastics. These are things I have been wanting to do for a while now, the hardest part is taking that leap and fully diving into a sustainable lifestyle.
