Idalee's actions
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 10 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Women-Owned Businesses
Sustainable Intensification for Smallholders
I will shop from women-owned business(es) today.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 3 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Electricity
Limit lightbulb use
I will turn off all the lights when I leave a room.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Learn about Biochar
Biochar Production
I will spend 10 minute(s) learning about biochar and how it can help sequester carbon.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 20 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Zero-waste Cooking
Reduced Food Waste
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Idalee Keller 6/10/2022 11:12 AMmy ecochallenge is going well, I've done 14 different challenges. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 11:11 AMIt feels great to go for a daily walk. I enjoy seeing all the different buildings and types of architecture. Something that would make walking more enjoyable would be less asphalt, and more environmentally camouflaged pathways. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 10:38 AMMany vegetable skins are the most nutritious part of the vegetable, so they should be eaten not wasted. You can wash the veggie really well to make sure the skin is clean before eating it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 10:35 AMWhen I eat mindfully, I enjoy the food more, and am more aware of the effect it has on my body. I also tend to not overeat, as I am more present when I am eating mindfully. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 10:34 AMBy spending more time in nature, I feel more connected to the plants and animals around me, and feel more inspired to protect their precious lives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 10:29 AMI work at and support Althea's Attic Boutique, which is owned by a woman, and run by a team of women. I can support more female-owned businesses by researching the stores I choose to shop at. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Idalee Keller 6/08/2022 10:27 AMRestrict use of one time plastic, refurbish a space using solely repurposed materials, and renew the length of a material's life time through proper storage and use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Idalee Keller 5/27/2022 11:07 AMIt can be used to reduce nutrient leaching, reduce soil acidity, and reduce irrigation and fertilizer requirements. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Idalee Keller 5/27/2022 11:05 AMI express myself through thrifted clothes which are unique and vintage treasures. I also express myself through language and artwork (and non- consumer items). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Idalee Keller 5/20/2022 10:55 AMI am more engaged when I walk and bike through town than when I drive, because I stop to talk with people in the community. It is ultimately nicer to go for a walk or bike ride than to drive.-
Jay Geibel 6/01/2022 9:42 AMI have been reflecting on this as well lately. It's amazing how little we see of the world when we are driving. We certainly do a lot of it in Vermont, despite having a strong "outdoor" ethic.
