After nearly a year of maintaining the same few goals, I've revamped my program and am just jumping in. A lot of my new plans are outdoors-related, so starting out in the new better weather June is a plus. I missed a recent chance to volunteer with a wetlands clean-up project and am actively scouting more chances to do so. Seattle has many wetlands so an opportunity will come up again soon. Hope summer has finally reached everyone now!

You are doing such awesome work. You know you should keep on updating people with your short blogs when you do these kinds of activities if you have time problems then ask a blog writing company to help you out in writing short blogs. This way more people can be inspired and do the same positive work

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Express My Support For Walkable Cities
How could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 6/06/2022 9:07 AM
Walkable communities provide fresh air, large muscle exercise and a chance to connect and socialize with neighbors beyond our direct next-door folks. This enhances equity by ensuring physical health and well-being, psychological sense of safety and social connection beyond online interaction, which is almost exclusively how many people socialize.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Building Resilience Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 6/06/2022 8:56 AM
Our culture is centered around consumption. We consume and absorb voraciously and give little attention to future needs or to replenishing what we use up. Regenerative agriculture assures that the cycle of replacement is maintained. It also strengthens the connection between human consumers and our habitat. This has benefits that can't be commodified, such as stress relief, emotional well-being, optimism, compassion for other life forms, and generosity to our biosphere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 6/06/2022 8:36 AM
The easiest way to do this is to puree or blenderize these "unusable" bits and add to soups or sauces for other dishes.  The puree can even be kept for a limited time and added for flavoring.

Action Track: Building Resilience Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 6/19/2021 3:34 PM
Those of us who grew up in tree-lined shady neighborhoods often took trees for granted. As life has become more urbanized and trees have disappeared to make more lanes for traffic, trees have become more important. Planting our own trees opens a whole new world. What kind of tree, what  needs for light and shade, what climate,.. These considerations brought a sense of harmony and beauty which is mentally restful, physically stimulating, and spiritually nourishing.  There's a sense of personally connecting with an open space.  Also a sense of contributing to the larger community by providing shade, oxygen, fragrance and shelter for insects and birds.

After several weeks of planning I finally planted two of my three trees today.  The third one will go in on July 4 so I'm counting it as good as done.  planting,  Today in honor of Juneteenth I planted a magnolia. It stands 5 feet already and looks like it will thrive. In the back yard I planted a young lilac.  And on Independence Day I'll plant a Japanese maple.  So nice to add to both the health and the beauty of the environment.

Got myself organized (finally) with the warm weather this week. Got all my plants transp;anted out into containers, and they're much happier.  Have two small raised beds and got them ready yesterday with compost and fresh soil; will bed out my root starts  tomorrow (carrots, beets, onions). It feels so good to get into the dirt again.  Happy Beltaine, everyone!  Enjoy the weekend!

Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 4/20/2021 6:28 PM
I didn't understand geothermal energy before reading the links that are posted on this site. We'll be needing to update our heating system within 1-2 years, and geothermal looks like the ideal way to do it.  Meanwhile, I'm involved in learning about which companies provide those services in my area, and encouraging people to consider it as an option. My state of Washington has committed to reduced fossil fuel use, so the community is likely to be receptive to discussing geothermal.

Electricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Sophia Keller's avatar
    Sophia Keller 3/06/2021 5:13 PM
Yes. I've already cut down considerably on driving, especially since one of my goals is to increase my daily walking.  I've decided now to go without the use of my vehicle for the next 7 days entirely. It will only require a small amount of planning. The one place I still need is to shop for garden supplies, but with organization that can be done just once a month.
