REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Keila Kimura 6/06/2023 12:13 PMQuite a few of the areas I see I can improve are out of my control such as building efficiency and quite a bit of my food. This is mostly because I do not have the funds or stability to decrease these significantly. I definitely will make small changes such as swapping out some foods and walking to do grocery shopping when I can.-
Daniela Carvajal 6/06/2023 6:45 PMHi Keila! After I determined my carbon footprint, I realized that most of it came from the vehicle drive. Something I started doing differently to change this, is I started walking to places that are nearby instead of driving there. For instance, I live very close to a Target and my local grocery store, so if I ever have to go for a few things I walk there instead of driving like I used to.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Keila Kimura 4/18/2023 11:02 AMI have noticed other people around me more. I also realize that I feel more refreshed and energized when starting the day with a daily walk instead of going straight to class and sitting at a desk. I wish that the pavements had less hazards along them and walking in such an urban area makes me miss walking around the abundance of greenery back home. I think walking would also be more feasible alone if I felt safe in my surroundings, but it is unfortunate that I need to be extra aware of my surroundings in an unenjoyable way when I walk alone. I think walking with other people may be a solution to this particular issue but then I miss out on the personal time I have for myself during these walks.-
Kelly Gocke 4/30/2023 10:58 PMHi Keila! I also agree that walking in an urban area is not the same as walking in my hometown, but I do appreciate that there are more people to see on my walks in Westwood than at home. I also second your sentiment about feeling safe in your surroundings, especially since sometimes I really want to go on a walk past sunset but I feel more anxious and less aware of my surroundings when it's dark.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Keila Kimura 4/18/2023 10:55 AMI find that this also contributes to eating more mindfully. I find that I eat the right amount to feel nourished but not overeat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Keila Kimura 4/13/2023 1:26 PMI commute to school and do grocery shopping primarily. I always carpool to school and the grocery stores. Primarily because I do not like driving alone, there is an added benefit of making these commutes with others. There is no need to use a single car to just transport me if I can avoid it because it would just contribute to traffic and air pollution per person.-
ANNA YAKURA 4/14/2023 9:28 AMHi Keila, I can definetly relate to this post! Carpooling and ride sharing with friends has been a great way for me to not only reduce my carbon footprint but spend time with my friends. On days where I can walk or carpool to my well-frequented areas, I find myself noticing more things about my surroundings, like the new spring flora around campus, running into other friends, and seeing exciting events take place. Taking transportation with others has been really fun for me!
