Go Paperless

Recycled Paper

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Lambert Kong's avatar
    Lambert Kong 2/09/2023 2:55 AM
Using smaller plates not only helps the environment, but it also has other benefits that I think are important to consider. By eating smaller portions, we can better control our calorie intake and maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, it helps us become more mindful of how much food we're consuming and prevents us from overeating. This can lead to improved digestion and a feeling of fullness. Furthermore, serving smaller portions can help reduce food waste, which is not only good for the environment but also helps us save money.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I think eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat has several positive impacts on ourselves and the planet. By incorporating more plant-based foods into our diet, we can benefit from increased nutrients and improved health outcomes. Additionally, reducing our meat consumption can significantly decrease carbon emissions, as animal agriculture is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, eating less meat can reduce demand for animal products, leading to more sustainable food production practices. This shift towards a more plant-based diet can also save energy, as producing plant-based foods requires less land, water, and energy compared to animal agriculture. I plan to make vegetables and fruits a larger portion of my future diet.

      Hi Lambert,

I completely agree with you that less meat is beneficial for us in many ways. Fruits and vegetables (if served right) are so healthy and they're also great for us. I think one way we can implement this diet within the future generations, would be to teach parents not to use feeding their child vegetables and fruits as a punishment, but rather as a reward. One significant reason why I think there is less consumption of vegetables and fruits right now is that people have been taught to hate them from a young age, not realizing the health benefits and also how delicious they actually are.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

To reduce waste, I make an effort to buy only what I need and avoid buying single-use items. I also try to reduce my energy and water usage by turning off lights and appliances when not in use and taking shorter showers. To reuse items, I bring my own reusable water bottle and grocery bag when I go out. When it comes to refusing, I try to avoid single-use items such as plastic straws and packaging whenever possible. For repairing, I will try to fix items instead of immediately replacing them when they break. Finally, I look for ways to repurpose items by finding new uses for old things instead of throwing them away. For example, I usually keep the plastic/paper boxes from the package wrap and reuse them as small containers or temporary trash bins.

What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

I usually try to reduce my usage of paper. For receipts, I either ask for no receipts or choose to receive them through email or text message. Additionally, for taking notes, I switched to using an iPad, which is more environmentally friendly than paper as it generates the same amount of carbon emissions as using just one sheet of paper after seven hours of use. Furthermore, I opt for paperless options when it comes to bills and documents by doing everything online. I also choose electronic versions of books and newspapers instead of their paper counterparts. Looking to the future, I plan to cancel any unnecessary subscriptions to avoid receiving junk paper mail. By making these small changes in my daily life, I hope to make a positive impact on the environment.

Hey, that is something small but pretty clever when it comes to declining receipts. Technology has made it easier to really cut out most paper uses, especially in school. I don't remember the last time I bought a notebook.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Plastic waste is a major problem, and it is important to make conscious choices to reduce our impact on the environment. The single-use items that I regularly use are straws and plastic bags. To reduce my waste, I now avoid using straws. Additionally, when shopping, I bring a reusable tote instead of using plastic bags. This not only reduces waste but also makes shopping easier and more convenient.I remember feeling guilty after watching a documentary about how plastic waste is suffocating and killing marine animals. It was then that I realized how selfish humans can be by producing vast amounts of plastic and recklessly discarding it into the ocean without considering the devastating effects it has on the animals that live there.

Hi Lambert, yes! the plastic problem is major! It is ranked the second global problem by the UN. it is important to have the conscious to reduce, reuse, and recycle. I also agree with you that this is more than individual effort, it is more about global cooperation at various levels. It is poor to hear about marine animals are suffering. I like how you bring this up so I could point out that equity between different species is also just.
