Christine Kostantakis 3/31/2021 8:15 AMUp to 90% rain showers and periods of rain in the forecast for Parsippany, NJ today (3/31) and tomorrow (4/1). Fact: When raindrops fall on clay or dusty soils, they trap small air bubbles on the surface which raise upward and burst out of the droplet. This produces pockets of scent into the air where they are then carried by wind. This familiar smell of rain is called "Petrichor'-

Christine Kostantakis 3/30/2021 11:47 AMHow does wildlife help the ecosystem? Wildlife helps to maintain the ecological balance of nature. Killing carnivores leads to an increase in the number of herbivores, which affect the forest vegetation, thus due to lack of food in the forest, they come out of the forest to agriculture land and destroy crops. -
Christine Kostantakis 3/22/2021 11:52 AMIt was sunny and 62 degrees in New Milford, NJ this past Sunday. I helped my elder father water his Hyacinths (first sign of spring-flowers). The leaves had begun to pop up from the ground; these plants have both a nice fragrance and come in a rainbow of colors. He was so happy and excited to see this. P.S. - he has a natural talent for gardening ...a true "green thumb"! -
Christine Kostantakis 3/19/2021 8:10 AMSpring is the season of new beginnings; fresh buds will bloom, animals awaken and the earth seems to come to life again; farmers and gardeners plant their seeds and temps start to rise. Spring 2021 will arrive at 5:37 am on Saturday, March 20. This is the period between the spring equinox and the summer solstice! Can't wait!! -
Christine Kostantakis 3/13/2021 6:54 AMIt's a beautiful sunny morning here in Dumont, NJ but a bit crisp. As I was taking a brief stroll in my neighborhood, I was thinking about Spring and that it's just around the corner! Can't wait to see Mother Nature's show as it starts to begin with signs of pretty plants and the first sign of spring flowers in bloom ...I can smell them the air! -
Christine Kostantakis 3/08/2021 11:58 AMFact (banner photo): One of the worst polluters of the Hudson River was General Electric. Between 1947 and 1977, GE dumped tons of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the Hudson River.
These toxic chemicals pose serious health risks to people who frequently eat fish from contaminated rivers and lakes. -
Christine Kostantakis 3/07/2021 9:40 AMThis weekend, my husband and I took a nice walk/stroll at the Palisades Interstate Park and Marina. You can explore from above the cliffs of the park or enjoy the Hudson River view from the water down below, at the marina. It's a great location to enjoy and spend outdoors, with spectacular views and a range of trails to choose from. Ah! A breath of fresh air! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Christine Kostantakis 3/07/2021 9:15 AMSome choices I've made to reduce carbon footprint are: carpooling to work, using reusable bags at the grocery store, purchasing energy-efficient appliances at home, switching to LED bulbs and dimmers, planting a veggie garden each year, eating more fruits/vegetables and less meat, installing low flowing faucets and setting timers on heating/cooling system, as well as sprinkler system, which includes a rain sensor. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Christine Kostantakis 3/07/2021 8:57 AMIn addition to eliminating exhaust emissions and improving public health, high fuel prices are a huge factor for wanting to purchase a more fuel-efficient vehicle; another reason would be the concerns about dependence on foreign oil. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their householdWhat kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?
Christine Kostantakis 3/07/2021 8:44 AMYou can start off discussing how you can help to stop global warming. Suggest ideas for renewable energy at home, purchasing LED bulbs, investing in energy efficient appliances, reducing water waste, being conscious of your food purchases (over buying) and embracing the 5 R's ... Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle.
