The Carbon Killers

"“The shift to a cleaner energy economy won’t happen overnight, and it will require tough choices along the way. But the debate is settled. Climate change is a fact. And when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say yes, we did.” — U.S. President Barack Obama, State of the Union, January 28, 2014"

I just returned from a wonderful vacation.  I flew 1,600 miles total and purchased carbon offsets.  That makes me feel only marginally better.

Do you know what's bad for the planet?  WAR.  I feel ill on so many levels about today's news.

    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Sarah Larsen's avatar
    Sarah Larsen 1/07/2020 5:43 PM
I had never heard of silvopasture before now, but it makes so much sense.  One of the advantages mentioned in the film was the efficiency of being able to manage multiple crops or resources on the same plot of land.  I wonder why more farmers don't use the technique.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Sarah Larsen's avatar
    Sarah Larsen 1/03/2020 8:12 PM
That’s a lot of money wasted! I’d rather use the money to take a vacation or purchase a paddle board!

No doubt! $1500??? Wow! And I love your choices - vacay or paddle board. So fun!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

    Sarah Larsen's avatar
    Sarah Larsen 1/03/2020 5:54 AM
I can take vacations closer to home, but regardless, purchasing carbon offsets is a great way to reduce environmental impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Sarah Larsen's avatar
    Sarah Larsen 1/03/2020 5:43 AM
This challenge was my first real experience learning about geothermal energy and it turns out, I'm not alone.  It's not very popular in the US.  I'm intrigued by the fact: Over 85% of all houses in Iceland are heated with renewable energy sources, thereof are 66% geothermal.

We changed our hvac system in our old farm house to geothermal about 10 years ago. As anyone who is the child of farmers knows, the last thing you pay for is heat. The house was frigid my entire life. Enter geothermal tech. The farm house is now always a cozy 78% and my stepfather just keeps saying "and it's so cheap!"
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Sarah Larsen's avatar
    Sarah Larsen 1/02/2020 1:01 PM
Eating smaller portions decreases the feeling of bloating and post-meal tiredness.  It also reduces the number of calories/fat/salt consumed.
