Solar panel installation

We installed solar panels on our roof and are waiting for the local county and Duke Energy to inspect them. We hope to have them working within the next 2 weeks so that we get most of our energy from the Sun. We will also bank extra energy we’ve accumulated with Duke so that when we need it we can draw upon it.

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

So many trees have died because of fires, hurricanes, and  development. Planting trees in memory of loved ones is a wonderful way to renew forests but also to memorialize family. The 5 trees will be grown and planted in Florida

It’s going well.  I’ve enjoyed walking in the woods, biking/walking to the woods to the Mailbox and learning about the cork forests.  Corkforests.org is an excellent website that clears up a lot of misinformation about cork. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE.  IN FACT, BUY CORKED WINE!  It helps the trees grow mor cork every 9 years and keeps the farmers farming and the ecosystem strong

It’s spring here in Denver NC so the weather couldn’t be better today.  It’s 75 and sunny.  Everything is blooming so of course, we have lots of pollen.  I think the addition of benches might encourage more folks to get out and walk knowing they could take a break if needed.

My community is collecting corks for the month of May.  In an effort to understand cork harvesting I checked out corkforest.org   The Ted Talk by Patrick Spencer, CEO of the site was 14 minutes or pure education.  There is no shortage of cork as the trees in the few countries that have cork forests can be harvested every 9 years.  It takes 8 years for the farmers to learn how to remove the cork from the tree.  Now, because of screw tops on wine bottles the trees aren’t being harvested as much. This is not good.  These trees take in loads of carbon.  The aluminum industry produces tons of waste ( Screw tops) that is not renewable The forests are home to about 13,000 different species of animals that can’t be found anywhere else!  So, wine lovers buy wine with CORK!

Yes, Tammy. I’m had no idea the misinformation about cork trees and forests.  There is NO SHORTAGE and we need to purchase corked wine so the farmers can keep harvesting the cork.  That is their livelihood.  And the trees are such an integral part of the ecosystem supporting all kinds of wildlife.

Wow!  Just wow!  Talk about misinformation.  Thank you for posting this.  I owned a wine shop for about 5 years in the early 2Ks and everyone was all about the "Stelvin Closure" or screw cap because the "cork trees are being cut down and soon there will be a shortage of cork", etc.  I'm sure that misinformation was started by the manufacturers of the screw cap.  I never knew.  I also visited the corkforest.org site.  Very interesting stuff.  Love the TED talk.  You have opened my eyes because to this day I look for screw caps.  But no more!!!  I want a bumper sticker that reads, "My Wine is Corked!" and corkforest.org underneath.

5 trees planted from the Arbor Day Foundation in either Florida or California.  5 small trees cost $24.00. . . Such a good investment!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Barb Litchfield's avatar
    Barb Litchfield 4/24/2022 6:11 PM
We use the entire stalk of celery including all the leaves in our salads.  I cut off the very ends as they’re tough.  Onion skins can be used as a dye for Easter eggs as can beet skins. If I could compost where I live I’d put the extra skins in compost but. . .the HOA wouldn’t allow it.

Good job, Tammy!  That broth you make sounds great as the first step to nutritious soup!

Shame on that HOA!  I think ours is opposed to it too.  I save all kinds of veggies "detritus" like carrot "butt-ends", celery roots, mushroom stems and onion and garlic skins in a freezer container.  A couple of times a year I throw it all in a big pot and simmer it for a couple of hours.  It makes great veggie broth.  Then I feel like I'm making all the use of it I can before I discard it.  Never thought of putting celery leaves in salads.  Great idea!

April 20, 2022.  In honor of Earth Day on the 22nd, and in memory of my in laws i purchased 5 trees from the Arbor Day Foundation.  This small grove will be planted in either California due to wildfire destruction or Florida due to hurricane damage.

It’s going well.  I’m more conscious of food preparation, how to add more veggies and fruit daily and how to prepare enough for a meal with either no leftovers or use leftovers at another meal
