Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Transition to cricket based dog food

David Loring 4/21/2022 6:30 AMSo last night my son threw an apple core in the garbage, and I picked it out ant put it in my compost container. Pretty sure I would have left it in the past so I am trying to be more conscious of that.-
Rachel Johnson 4/23/2022 1:14 PMAwesome! I am constantly pulling recycling and compostables out of my family's trash. You think they would've realized it by now, but I'll keep doing it.

David Loring 4/17/2022 1:15 PMThanks for the tip on the dog food. I went camping this weekend with my sons and tried to be more conscious about eating all the food we brought and bringing home anything leftover. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
David Loring 4/10/2022 8:38 AMWhen we went on vacation last week, we had a condo with a kitchen and did our best to minimize food waste from the meals. Hopefully, the staff took the non-perishable food. Should I leave a note in the future asking staff to take those goods?-
Tammy Alverson 4/16/2022 9:34 AMWe stay at the same condo every year when we go to Florida. The management asks that you don't leave items in the unit but they have a basket for non-perishables in the office. We can leave things there. -
David Loring 4/11/2022 10:34 AMCarolyn,
Great idea. I will at least try a note next time! -
Carolyn Ramseur 4/11/2022 8:08 AMI think this is a hard question and one that is fairly more systemic. As someone who has worked in hospitality we've seen it ALL. Even if it seems fine - it's hard to say you're going to consume food when you don't know exactly how it was handled. I think a note could help this situation! can't hurt to try right? There may be company regulations in place that prevent this sort of thing for health and safety reasons (that's where the systemic comes in...).
