World Clean Up Day - Sept 18
World Cleanup Day 2021 - are you ready to join in? It's so simple (just 3 steps) and together we can make a huge impact on our environment...here's how 1) Rally some friends, family, colleagues living nearby and help together as a team in person or virtually to cleanup our communities, local streets, rivers, lakes & parks (rubbish is to be found everywhere!). Why not even engage with the local schools & Kindergarten and get the children involved too. 2) Choose the day you wish to run your team activity (our suggestion is Friday 17th Sep) and create your own shift under this activity to log your VTO hrs! 3) Share photos of you & your teams in action, in one or both of the Earthforce Slack channels (add #worldcleanupday2021): #eq-earthforce-germany #eq-earthforce-global Remember to always adhere to local Covid safety regulations!
Electricity
Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Onshore Wind Turbines, Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will purchase Renewable Energy Credits to match my usage.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Advocate for Solar Installation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will create a plan to and advocate for solar installation at my business, apartment building, or campus.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 20 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Electricity
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Electricity
Rooftop Solar Consultation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
After researching the incentives at the federal, state, utility, and local levels, I will contact a local installer/distributor for a solar panel installation consultation on my house.
Electricity
Explore Other Electricity Solutions
All Electricity Solutions
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching other Drawdown Electricity Solutions.
Electricity
Solar Water Consultation
Solar Hot Water
I will contact a local installer/distributor to see if a solar water heater makes sense for my house.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Transportation
Purchase a Carbon Offset
Efficient Aviation
If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Rooftop Solar ConsultationIdentify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?
Wade Lovell (they/them/theirs) 9/07/2021 11:13 AMWe have so many phantom loads we have to have smart meters to hunt them down. We are reducing the number of chargers that aren't plugged into anything and swapping energy efficient laptops and docks for our desktop computers. Still, working from home involves summer AC, something we have never done. We have planted at least 200 trees each year for the last decade. That number may have to go up if we keep running the AC. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Wade Lovell (they/them/theirs) 9/07/2021 11:07 AMThere are 6 non-LED lights left in the house. So far, the LEDs available for our hanging lights (originally halogen bulbs) have not lasted long or worked well. We have tried at least four generations of LEDs for this purpose over the last 10-12 years. We have six still installed but have six in the office we've switched back due to issues with flickering and poor illumination. I'm looking forward to finding better replacements. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Solar Water ConsultationDiversifying our energy supply and improving public health are just two benefits of renewable energy. What other motivators inspire you to consider installing a solar water heater in your home?
Wade Lovell (they/them/theirs) 9/07/2021 11:01 AMI think this is an amazing use of natural resources and would certainly cut down on our natural gas consumption. We have a 6 Kw photovoltaic plant (solar panels) on our house which covers most of our electricity throughout the year. Unlike the solar PV which has a 7 year payback, at $2.5k-$6k, the solar water heating has an 8-20 year payback if it replaces 100% of our gas usage, which it doesn't. I don't see us moving forward on this.-
Lucinda Young 9/09/2021 6:33 PMWe are considering an electric heat pump water heater to replace our gas tankless hot water heater. My understanding is that the electric heat pump is much more efficient & cost effective than solar hot water, at least in our area in No CA. Not sure where you are, but my understanding is electric heat pumps don't work as well in areas where temperature often drops below freezing.
