  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 12/08/2020 2:46 PM
I have not heard of it before now. I think the biggest advantage of it is that the animals get shade. It sounds like the shade does a lot to help them like making them produce more milk and ahve higher quality meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 12/04/2020 7:37 AM
I think a good sustainable community would look like using methane to power things because it stays in the atmosphere for 15 years, while carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for 500 years. We would have to make big changes in government spending and make campaigns to make people want to use methane.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 12/03/2020 9:40 AM
I learned that family planning is when you plan to either have or not have a family by using birth control or not using it. In some places, people don’t learn at all about family planning, despite being a developed country. Those places need education more than other places that already have education.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 12/02/2020 7:32 AM
    1. It makes me want to donate to some of these groups that help the environment and be more cautious of my purchases so that I don’t buy something that destroys forests or something.
    2. Just how widespread it all is, and how it’s because of these giant corporations and people that it’s happening. It seems insurmountable.
3.That there are a lot of people fighting for the cause.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 12/01/2020 10:02 AM
You can donate to organizations that protect and restore peatlands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 11/30/2020 12:36 PM
I live in North Carolina, which contrary to the name is in the south so there are people who are sexist, racist, and homophobic. There are a lot of those sexist people so that can be bad for women in my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 11/24/2020 8:26 AM
I eat meat almost every day probably so the soy going towards the animals is destroying forests. I could eat less meat and more plant-based alternatives.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 11/20/2020 7:33 AM
Microturbines could be installed on top of the mountains because there is a lot of wind up there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 11/19/2020 9:29 AM
I had heard of it barely. I was surprised to learn that it is not reliable enough to be a solution, and is just a way to get to a solution.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    William Mammes's avatar
    William Mammes 11/18/2020 2:12 PM
I can spread the word on Instagram with links to Geothermal Energy plants or research groups.
