  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/04/2020 10:11 AM
My visual of a sustainable community is one where the majority of people use a renewable source of energy and find ways to limit there waste by using things like small methane digesters.  What would need to change is more people slowly switching to sustainable energy which is going to take time because most people currently don't have the money to fully be able to switch
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Gray Martin 12/04/2020 9:47 AM
I learned that when we institute easy access to family planing there is evidence that shows it is extremely effective on the rates of teen pregnancy.  In every country life is a little different in america a lot of people have access to internet but some women can't get the money they need to pay for things like IUD's, and in other less developed country's women don't have access to the sex education of family planning.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/03/2020 1:20 PM
It makes me want to be more active to try and give myself and future generations a better future. How much environmental damage is being done and how much we have to do to reverse it. What makes me feel hopeful is the amount of people and support that goes into environmental conservation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/03/2020 12:23 PM
I can make choices by choosing not to buy palm oil products and buy replacements that are not as environmentally damaging.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/03/2020 12:03 PM
In my communicate there is a disparity between the amount of money women and minority business owners get from contracts.  The study showed that over a 7 year period women and minorities business owners got less contract money than white male owners did.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/02/2020 2:27 PM
My diet consists of a lot of meat which means that I create a large amount of deforestation because of what I eat. What I can do to decrease my negative impact is to start eating more plant based foods, like fried rice, and vegan dumplings.  To increase my positive impact I can buy more plant based foods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/02/2020 1:49 PM
It means that I don't have to worry about how it will affect my health and  won't waste food by not buying it because I think that it will harm me
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/02/2020 11:58 AM
The one that is the closest to me is in Shelby which is really far away from my house.  We could encourage other supermarkets to get rid of HFC refrigerants by sending the owners of the local supermarkets emails or making and promoting a petition to switch to cleaner refrigerators.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Explore Other Transportation Solutions
What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/02/2020 11:37 AM
I found out that if we prioritized public transport and walk able cities other than just making more room for cars we could cut down on carbon emissions by a lot.  The most interesting fact that I learned was that when New York made parts of time square pedestrianized traffic speed increased by 7% and businesses along times square weren't as heavily affect as they thought they would be.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Gray Martin's avatar
    Gray Martin 12/02/2020 11:14 AM
Micro turbines could be installed on the former BB&T building, many other tall buildings like the art mesem also could but I doubt any of them would produce the same amount of energy as the ones on the former BB&T building.
