REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Makayla Mayton 5/13/2020 5:35 PMFrom birth women are held to higher expectations yet are also stereotyped into being weaker physically and mentally. Women are held back by perceived ideas of emotional intelligence and gender culture, and how this may impact leadership. There is a common belief that gender differences make women and men effective in different roles (“masculine” vs “feminine” jobs). It is extremely important that everyone realizes women, men, and gender non-conforming people have the same amount of potential in the world, it is societal and cultural ideas that build barriers and prevent women’s equal participation and representation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Makayla Mayton 5/12/2020 11:41 AMI could do more research on the foods I eat to find out if palm oil is used, and make changes to my diet as needed. This way I can know what companies to support and with that knowledge I can educate my friends and family about what I have learned and how we can all do better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Makayla Mayton 5/08/2020 11:06 AMI am most concerned with pollution (mostly air and plastic) and deforestation. All of the damage we have caused has triggered many issues like climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and so much more. I am afraid for my future and possibly my kids' future. The question: "what kind of world will we live in a few years time if we don't change?" scares me and I want to make a difference, no matter how small... Ways to help our planet is instructing people on the correct way to recycle and practicing as such, driving less, avoiding single use plastics, exploring renewable resources, etc. I think it is very important that everyone is educated on the issues of our planet and how they as an individual can help be a part of the solution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Makayla Mayton 5/06/2020 10:56 AMPrior to this assignment, I had never heard the word silvopasture. Even after watching the video I was still a little confused, but the Drawdown website cleared everything up. After learning more about it I think one of the biggest advantages is the reduction of carbon emissions that come from this diverse and productive land. Not only does it help the farmers and their livestock on a smaller scale but it also holds a lot of hope for Earth. -

Makayla Mayton 5/06/2020 10:55 AMOops, wrong reflection... Knowing the difference between the different phrases helps me make better decisions when buying and disposing of packaged food. Understanding the meaning of the printed "Best by" date (or other printed phrases that are similar) helps me understand if the food has or has not really gone bad, so I do not contribute to food waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Makayla Mayton 5/06/2020 10:48 AMMy diet is currently impacting deforestation because I consume my fair share of palm oil. The fact that palm oil can be hidden under different names and is in just about every big brand is quite unsettling... I can decrease my negative impact by looking at product alternatives that do not contain palm oil. I can increase my positive impact by not only doing what I described previously but I can also continue to grow in my learning while educating others.
