Transportation

Stay on the Ground

Telepresence, High-Speed Rail

Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Keep Track of Wasted Food

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity

Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household

Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

The change in the weather means I have to change up our menus at home. This is complicated because I hyper-fixate on meals, and I’m not ready for salad season to be over!

My daughter and I are sick today so we’ll see how that affects our food waste.

The attention I am giving to food waste is also bringing my attention to food aversions that I have. I have always struggled with eating disorders, and I am incredibly picky about what my food looks, feels, and tastes like. This is adding a level of complication I wasn't expecting to this activity.

I'm planning out meals for the next few days, and I am noticing that I am already using what I have learned about our eating/wasting habits to adjust for less waste.

This reminds me of how using smaller portion sizes also helps me reduce waste especially when I am picky and like to eat a lot of different things at once haha.

I noticed that I am also paying a lot more attention to recycling. I'm not sure if it's because I'm paying so much attention to food waste, but I guess it doesn't really matter. I see now that I have been throwing out massive amounts of non-recyclable materials in with my recycling. I'm going to have to rethink my whole waste system in my kitchen.

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed at how much food we’re wasting. Not even just food that goes bad, but I’m really being tested on what I find “acceptable” to eat (e.g. the heels of the bread loaf). Definitely having to check my privilege hard in this.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would spend all of that $1,500 on books.

Noticing that a lot of what I am throwing away should be composted or fed to the birds (whole grain bread and nuts only).

The food waste challenge is going to be rough, I already know we waste a lot of food, but I have always been able to minimize the real weight of it. The other two challenges were pretty easy actually. My kids are disappointed that we won't be flying to LA next month, but we will be able to do even more with the money that we are saving.

What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

I was debating flying to LA in November for a mini vaca with my kids, but after looking at how much we actually save, both financially and environmentally, it made much more sense to take my car. I wish that the high speed rail was an option for us though.
