Mariah McCreary 5/01/2020 8:57 AMWhile my dates do not match, I actually completed my challenge April 1st - April 21st in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The main goal I had for practicing the 5 R's was reducing my overall wasteful habits. I am proud to say that for 21 days, I was vegan/vegetarian. This is the longest I have ever gone without red meat and I can say that my cravings have been minimal. A big reason for this success was that my boyfriend wanted to join me in finding sustainable recipes. I have found that it is easier (and much more fun) to make sustainable swaps with like minded individuals. It makes the process feel less restrictive and more like an adventure. -
Mariah McCreary 5/01/2020 8:48 AMIn an effort to reduce the amount of waste I send to the landfill, I've been attempting to repurpose a few items. For example, during this time of increased online ordering I have received many boxes. Rather than breaking them all down, I have repurposed two of them as tv dinner trays. By simply flipping the opening over and attaching a towel as a placemat, this 5 second DIY has already been used over 10 times. When not in use in other areas of the house, they are stacked at the end of the couch and serve as an end table! -
Mariah McCreary 4/25/2020 2:14 PMWhen I began my daily challenge, I had assumed that it would be more energy efficient to wash my dishes by hand. I have since learned that it is more energy efficient to use a dishwasher (without the drying feature!), no matter the age of the appliance. In addition, I have found sustainable dishwasher pods to use. They are called Dropps and I found them through EarthHero, a website dedicated to supporting sustainable companies. I've added a photo from their website, since I have already composted the box mine came in. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Mariah McCreary 4/13/2020 5:19 PMI shopped at the local coop (Three Rivers Market), where I took my own shopping and produce bags.-
Mariah McCreary 5/01/2020 9:26 AMIn reference to reducing energy consumption, I also wanted to mention my use of air conditioning. From April 8th-April 14th, my home went without AC. While I have used it here and there since then, I try to keep it off as often as possible. Since I do not have much control over the efficiency in an apartment, I do my part by trying to keep it off and enjoy the weather. This has been especially beneficial during social distancing. -
Mariah McCreary 5/01/2020 9:14 AMI originally thought this reflection question would pop up daily for the daily challenge. I misunderstood. So here is my actual reflection:
I decided to treat this 21 day challenge as a consecutive thing in an effort to truly change my habits. This has launched me head first into sustainable living. I have learned SO much. When I first chose this challenge in January, I had one idea for daily sustainable action: using my hydroflask to reduce my consumption of single use beverage containers. Since then, I have learned how to implement many more daily (or frequent) actions. I take my own reusable shopping and produce bags to the store. I try to purchase as much as I can from Three Rivers Market in an effort to eat within my foodshed. If I do order food to-go, I make a point to say I don't need utensils or condiments. I have continued to avoid red meat but if I do go back, I will only purchase local. I have always felt like the light police in my home, but this has extended to avoiding overcharging by unplugging things when they are not in use. I run my dishwasher only when it is completely full and I am so happy to have found my sustainable dishwasher pods. I have made a list of all the single use items in my home that I replenish. It is my new goal is try to make sustainable swaps for these items once they have run out. As excited as I am to have eco-conscious options, I am making it a point to REDUCE before moving on to any of the other R's. That is the main thing I learned through this challenge. Too many people focus on recycling and repurposing, but the most important thing about sustainable living is REDUCING! :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Mariah McCreary 2/13/2020 1:16 PMFresh Market provides fresh, sustainable Atlantic Salmon. This is one of the most sustainable options for salmon. I recently purchased some and made salmon patties with a recipe I found on the seafoodwatch.org website. It was a great application of what I learned. I have continued to pull recipes from this website, using their guidance on sustainable fish.-
Mariah McCreary 5/01/2020 8:38 AMI never posted the picture of the meal I made, so here it is! While not the prettiest, it was delicious. My boyfriend has since asked me to make these multiple times. As a person who is not typically a cook, I'm quite proud.
