Jeffrey's actions
Electricity
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Electricity
Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 5 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health and Education
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Health and Education
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go by Bike
Bicycle Infrastructure
I will commute by bike 2 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Jeffrey Melcher 5/22/2021 7:36 PMAnd a little more research I looked at "Swamp Coolers". They have units for single areas of about 500-700 sq. ft (my apt is 520 sq ft) for around $300-$500. Add 300watts of solar panels and a battery source with some installation and I could have solar powered heating/cooling for maybe around $2k. I can share this info with my coop-mates who need a heater replaced. A standard methane wall heater is about the same price with installation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Jeffrey Melcher 5/09/2021 10:58 AMYikes!! Argh! ... I am approximately using annually the equivalent to 1,768 Gallons of gasoline consumed in energy/CO2 footprint. I will strive to reduce my carbon footprint to less than 1700 gallons of gasoline (1.34 tons of CO2). This is only about 5% reduction, but I can do it by eating less meat and more vegetables. (I've already nearly cut out the eating of mammals.), using public transportation more, and going to bed earlier. (This will use less electricity and keep me healthy, wealthy and wise!) Next year I will figure out how to reduce another 5%.-
Heather Macleod 5/09/2021 11:29 AMinteresting - going to bed earlier as a climate action. That's creative and multi-functional!
