Intro to the Carbon Cycle

In Earth Science this year, we're going to be talking a lot about climate change and the carbon cycle. Take a minute to read the article/video linked below and answer the reflection question.

Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon Cycle

Climate change is occurring because of a phenomenon that is also a very basic chemical reaction. When fossil fuels burn, carbon dioxide is produced. Usually, this reaction balances out as carbon dioxide is then used during photosynthesis. However, the amount of carbon being produced currently, due to our overuse of fossil fuels, is tipping this delicate balance. We'll talk more about the effects later on...in the meantime let's learn about how to reduce the ways WE start chemical reactions that create carbon. Use the link below to measure your carbon footprint.

A more energy-efficient form of transportation is riding a bike rather than driving a car. This is because you need more energy to propel a car forward than a bike. In the blog, he says that riding his bike used 15,011 Joules per kilogram. Driving his car the same distance uses 100841 Joules per kilogram. This means that a bike is much more energy-efficient for its mass than a car. So even if the car had the same mass as my bike, it would still be 6.72 times more energy efficient to bike rather than taking the car.  An alternate form of transportation could include an air-powered car. The air-powered car doesn't carry the weight of the engine resulting in a more energy-efficient vehicle. If a gas-powered car could take-off weight, it would be a much more energy-efficient vehicle.

I can decrease my carbon footprint by riding my bike and walking where a car is not necessary, as well as carpooling with others.
