Reduced Food Waste

I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Before really trying to cut down on single use items, I would never bring my own cup when I got coffee, and would normally get iced coffee so would always use a straw. For the past couple years, I've been bringing my own bags to the grocery store, and always have my set of bamboo utensils on me. I've been pretty good about bringing my own cup to most places as well. Little things like that really help reduce single use items, and make me feel good about helping.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I drive to the grocery store maybe once every week and a half, and drive to work 4 days a week. Both of these I try to find a buddy to carpool with. I work with my family so we always drive together to work, and my partner and I normally grocery shop together. Anything that I can bike to I normally try.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

I love biking! I've always really enjoyed this method of transportation, and being able to do it instead of driving feels really good. Its a great way to exercise while also doing something positive for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

I grew up in a huge family, where I got used to having to eat fast if I wanted to be able to keep up with my siblings and cousins. In my family, food is a huge part of how we come together. I found myself, starting as a young person, eating way too fast and overfilling myself quite often. I would get stomach aches after meals because I didn't know the right portions for my body. Doing this challenge has been really helpful for me. I've been putting more effort into only cooking the amount I eat, and making sure that if there is any leftover food to eat it for the next meal. I've been working on finding portion sizes that work well with my body, and overall think this challenge has been very helpful!
