Sorry for the kinda gross image but...

For my new EcoChallenge I decided to add a compost bin! We never actually had an official one, and I realize this one is sorta tiny but it is honestly better than nothing. When we had chickens at my house earlier they sorta acted as our "compost bin" because they literally eat ANYTHING. And I really do mean anything. Anytime we had leftovers such as rice, stews, fruits and vegetables that weren't good to eat anymore we would create this pile on our kitchen counter than was meant for the chickens. Then everyday morning someone would take the pile and put it in the chicken coop for them to enjoy. Boy, did they enjoy the food alright. I've never seen an organism (humans included) eat rice so fast in my life. I don't know what it was about carbohydrates but they LOVED rice. The mushier the rice, the easier it was to swallow.

We don't have chickens anymore at my house so for a period of time my family would just throw away any compostable material in the trash can. A compost bin is a perfect way to minimize what goes in the trash can and can be beneficial. Compost can end up acting as a fertilizer for our soil and help our plants grow! We have a lot of fruit trees in our yard as well that we could dump fruit and vegetable peels on!

      Nice work Mona!

Before coming to college, I had no real knowledge of composting. Since getting to UCLA, I have a compost bin in my dorm room and there are many compost bins around campus, especially at the dining halls where all of the boxes, cups, utensils are compostable. Although I have begun composing since being at college and know it's beneficial, I never knew specific benefits until I looked them up after reading your post.

After doing some research, I now know that composting lowers my carbon footprint. According to the Eco Guide, "Food waste represents 21.1% of the trash produced in the US even after recycling and composting are taken into account." With this in mind, it becomes even more clear how reducing this waste can go a long way in reducing total waste in the United States. The process of taking food waste from homes to landfills involves a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. Not only do garbage trucks use a lot of gas and increase emissions relating to the long distances they travel and high number of stops they take, there are also high emissions at landfills as well. With this in mind, I now feel more educated about why composting is crucial. In the past I had never seen a garbage truck and thought about how many stops it takes and how much it contributes to emissions. Just this year I feel like I have come such a long way in my mindfulness towards sustainability and carbon footprints. Composting has become a large part of my daily life this year at every meal, and I am grateful that UCLA has provided the resources to its on-campus students to practice sustainable actions.

Like you mentioned, although this is a small action, if everyone contributes to composting and begins to make composting part of their daily life, it can make a big difference. In order to do this, I think the first step is to get more compost bins out in public. Although I see them everywhere on campus, the second I leave campus they disappear and there is only garbage bins. The more compost bins are promoted and added to streets and busy areas, the more aware people will become off composting on a daily basis. Inspired to do more, I have begun looking into the US Composting Council to find more ways I can get involved and advocate for the cause.

      Hi Mona,

I really enjoyed reading the story behind your compost bin! I did not realize that chickens will eat anything. I wonder if Randy’s chicken like rice also? I think it is amazing that you are starting to compost! I really want to encourage my family to get a compost bin as well. My boyfriend’s family has a compost bin and they put the compost in their garden, where they grow herbs and tomatoes. After I have more free time once schools gets out, I want to start growing fruit trees in my backyard. I am curious to learn more about which types of fruit trees you have in your yard! I recently planted a walnut tree, and I am really excited to have fresh walnuts.

I think it is amazing you are reducing your footprint by composting. Another way you could try reducing your carbon footprint is by avoiding unnecessary trips in your car. I recently took on the EcoChallenge to cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips and only using muscle-powered transportation for all other trips. I have found it very rewarding so far! I discovered a local farm down the street from my house where I can buy produce, eggs, and jam. I bought some delicious strawberry jam yesterday that is made with strawberries grown down the street from my house. It feels so good to eat locally grown food. In addition, purchasing food from this farm rather than driving to the grocery store can allow me to greatly reduce my car trip mileage, especially since the grocery store is a fifteen minute drive away. Additionally, I am trying to plan my meals more so I don’t have to make as many trips to the store. If I know which ingredients I will need for the entire week, I can purchase them in one trip.

So with Ramadan almost over, I decided to take a photo of the meal I ate to break one of my fasts to represent a month's hard work! Ramadan is a holy month of fasting for Muslims where we do not eat or drink during daylight hours and break our fasts at night. The challenge I did this year with my iftar (meal for fasting) is eating mindfully. I feel like I am so used to having my phone around, watching TV or doing something rather than just focusing on enjoying me food. (Obviously taking this photo was the exception).
Being aware and in the moment of your food really changes the way you eat. The portion you see below was a pretty hefty portion and I realized this when I ate it and felt full halfway through. I feel like when you are observing something else you ignore how much food really goes into your mouth and then have a tendency to overeat.
One of the benefits of fasting is actually a physical cleanse of your body from many toxins. In this time of attentive renewal, your body really uses up the resources you give it to replenish its system. I spent the past month trying to focus on non-processed, home cooked meals and lemme tell you I feel GREAT!

I like travelling to many places to visit friends, camp, or just seeking out new little adventures. Toiletry items can be a hassle and I have been meaning to get a new travel toothbrush for when I visit my friends in LA. I thought, why not bamboo! So I went onto Amazon and found these cool eco-friendly bamboo toothbrushes that will last me a while. They're aesthetically pleasing and will make me feel better about my plastic pollution because they are biodegradable.

I kinda went on a bamboo spree and bought some bamboo face towels too. I am pretty strict about my skincare so I needed to invest in some washcloths too! I was sad when they came in the plastic packaging but surprisingly the Amazon package was made out of a paper bag which is better than plastic! Although I am sure the shipping took a hit at my carbon footprint, it is better than ordering something that can't be biodegradable.

I am probably the happiest when I am travelling with my friends. Travelling allows me to see, first-hand, this crazy, mysterious world that we live in. That might be a typical cheesy reason for "my why", but it is the truth. The excitement of going to a planned (or even unplanned) location, and taking in that moment is what powers me through my work and the hard times. Travelling to different places makes me feel young and optimistic. When you experience the vast world around you, your problems become insignificant in comparison the universe. I feel at peace, mesmerized and happy all at once, and I want to get these feelings as much as one can in their lifetime. This is part of my why, because I want to continue experiencing the beautiful sites around me and pass these views to my future family. Without doing anything about climate change, I will not get the opportunity to see the world's beauty without it being tarnished from pollution and heat.

Originally, I took this class because I needed to satisfy a Writing 2 requirement. I was never a fan of English writing and thought this would be another high school English-style analysis class. To my pleasant surprise, this is one of my most interesting classes now. Each class inspires me to take action rather than just sitting in a lecture and absorbing information. I feel like I can actually do something in the present, rather than waiting 12 years for a degree to start working.

Anyways, I think this quarter will teach me a lot and fix some unhealthy habits. Here's a photo of me from a road trip that ended in San Luis Obispo with some old friends!
