Intro to the Carbon Cycle
In Earth Science this year, we're going to be talking a lot about climate change and the carbon cycle. Take a minute to read the article/video linked below and answer the reflection question.

Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon Cycle
Climate change is occurring because of a phenomenon that is also a very basic chemical reaction. When fossil fuels burn, carbon dioxide is produced. Usually, this reaction balances out as carbon dioxide is then used during photosynthesis. However, the amount of carbon being produced currently, due to our overuse of fossil fuels, is tipping this delicate balance. We'll talk more about the effects later on...in the meantime let's learn about how to reduce the ways WE start chemical reactions that create carbon. Use the link below to measure your carbon footprint.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 20 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 200 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Climate Change Skepticism
Visit the link below and read about a common misconception about climate change and Earth's cycles. Answer the reflection question.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Lila Mitchell 4/02/2021 8:14 AMYou could stop using so much water, and not use as much paper/ palm oil -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Lila Mitchell 3/26/2021 8:52 AMIt will make you feel really small and appreciate just how big the world is and how insignificant you are -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Intro to the Carbon Cycle1. Where does carbon originate? 2. How is carbon released? 3. Where does carbon go once it's released? 4. What is the connection between carbon change, fossil fuel use, and the carbon cycle?
Lila Mitchell 1/07/2021 10:11 AM1. Carbon is found in the atmosphere, and when new life is formed it is in particles and dna
2. into the atmosphere
3.carbon is stored in rocks and sediments and the ocean and the atmosphere and living organisms.
4. dead organisms can become fossil fuel that go through combustion and give off C02 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon CycleWhat's one way you can either offset or limit the amount of carbon you are producing?
Lila Mitchell 1/07/2021 10:06 AMI can stop taking 15 minute showers because it is taking up the water bill. i can also go off electronics more because of electricity
