Merrick's actions
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Learn about the impact of old refrigerants
I will spend 15 minute(s) learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links provided
Transportation
Learn about Carbon Offsets
I will visit Tradewater’s website to learn more about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.
Electricity
Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Electricity
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Transportation
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Electricity
Communicate With My Elected Officials
Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines
I will write or call 2 elected official(s) telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 5 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their householdWhat kinds of discussions did you have, or are you hoping to have with friends about climate change?
Merrick Modun 6/02/2023 5:17 AMI hope to talk more about dispelling the notion that individual actions won't matter in the grand scheme of things. The issue is that many people have this mentality, so there is a strong compounding effect. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Communicate With My Elected OfficialsWhat inspires you to act on sustainable energy and other energy issues?
Merrick Modun 6/02/2023 5:15 AMClimate change is here and is the single most important issue of our time. As human-caused warming continues, we will witness a cascade of environmental, social, and economic disruptions. I am inspired to act on climate issues because I don't think we are taking action quickly enough. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Merrick Modun 6/02/2023 5:13 AMThere is so much food waste in America and I imagine the effective management of smaller portions means more people will have access to food. -
