Jakeb Moore 4/30/2020 11:47 AMToday I cooked an excellent vegan lunch with spinach, tofu, tomato, avocado, rice, onion and a soy sauce. -
Jakeb Moore 4/30/2020 11:45 AMToday was a difficult day for the challenge as I was searching for a vegan alternative on the road. We were traveling to Virginia for a family emergency. I was able to convince my family to stop at chipotle instead of Chickfila so I could have vegan option. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Jakeb Moore 4/30/2020 11:40 AMPeople in richer countries tend to eat more meat because of the price and accessibility to purchase clean meat. The federal government subsidies meat processing companies to allow for cheap meat and easy access to it. People are able to afford the price of meat so they consume it because they believe it is good. Generations have been trained to consume meat and meat only thanks to officials and companies marketing and saturating the market with meat. They tell you it is the only thing to eat and people caught on. Eating meat affects our planet because of land use changes, water consumption and toxicity, and methane emissions. The consumption of red meat increases your risk for heart disease and failure and other deadly diseases. If the world were vegan a lot of virus' we have would be nonexistent as most virus' come from the consumption of animals. -
Jakeb Moore 4/22/2020 11:31 AMThe vegan challenge has proven very hard especially going from living and cooking alone to living with my family and having them cook. They aren't the most accommodating which really makes it a challenge but I guess that's the point.-
Asya Hangul 4/23/2020 1:01 PMJakeb, I completely understand this! When I went vegetarian (then vegan) my family was having trouble accommodating to my new diet, even though they have always been very health conscious. This opened up an opportunity for me to express my motives behind my decision, that being mainly animal agriculture. I took initiative and started cooking vegetarian and vegan meals for the whole family and now, even when I'm away, my parents have been eating mainly vegan meals. Try to make things fun by proposing the idea of having a night where the whole family cooks a new recipe together! There's no better time to get out of our comfort zones than an already odd time like quarantine.
