The Carbon Killers

"In September 2019, I watched Greta sail across the Atlantic to give her courageous speech at the United Nations. SNAP! a huge internal shift occurred inside me. What kind of planet are we leaving for our children, and for all the creatures on this Earth? The time is now to change our habits and bring down the carbon. Let's do this!!! "

City of Ashland Website Brainstorm Session

Today I met with the Climate Analyst for the city of Ashland and we talked how to reshape the climate portion of the website to make it super user friendly and give Ashlanders vital information. We want to answer these questions: what is the city's plan? what can we each do to help? How do we know we're meeting our goals. We further drilled down into the topics people would learn about - water, buildings, energy, waste, transport, healthy ecosystems, green products / consumption, land use, preparing the community, and engaging citizens. Feels like we're making great progress!

Turns out this is the Superbowl's 3rd year trying this - and they are doing an amazing job! SO awesome to read!!!

So... this may only interest the ladies, but I went down the rabbit hole today in search of zero waste mascara.

I don't even want to think about all the empty plastic tubes I've thrown away throughout the years.

So! My research revealed that most mascara has yucky ingredients - including that all pervasive PALM OIL. I found a clean one on Etsy with good reviews. It comes in a little tin, with a little bamboo wand, and has super simple ingredients. Fingers crossed!

I went down the same rabbit hole  trying to figure out what is in my Diva Curl shampoo and conditioner.  It doesn't say Palm Oil (it has Grapeseed), but when I looked at various eco friendly sites, it sounded like Palm Oil can be disguised using lots of terms.  I still have no idea of it's okay (though it's in a plastic bottle, so it already has points against it).  I was thinking about writing the company to ask.  Somehow, I have a feeling it is up to no good.  Alaffia used to make this awesome super clean shampoo and conditioner that you could buy at the co-op for curls, but they stopped making it.  Any of my curly girls out there have any other ideas of something that meets eco standards and is good for curls?

Today I walked from our home, to Shop N Cart, to the eye doc, and back. This challenge has changed me in that way - it was really easy, and only took a little longer than if I drove. Plus Lucien came with me, so we had some nice time together. I love not using the car and walking / biking instead!

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Erin M's avatar
    Erin M 1/28/2020 7:32 PM
This is a great question, because I do turn to my wardrobe almost like an actor would to dress for roles. Businesswoman Erin, exercising Erin, theme party Erin (silly but true!).

I have always loved clothes and make up and style, and a local friend Natalie owns Swap Don't Shop in town. She's gorgeous and such a sharp dresser, and she hasn't purchased anything new in years. Great role model! I have always loved a second hand score, and now want to get more creative / be more careful with what I buy in the future.

My son also has an amazing sense of style, so how can he shine through fashion  without contributing to the serious issues of Fast Fashion?

I have hosted an annual naked lady clothing swap for the past 20 years or so.  It truly is the source of most of my clothes.  It has helped strengthen my communities (Portland and Madison) because so many friends have brought their friends and gotten to know each other there.  It's always fun to see someone else rocking your clothes!  I'm sure some awesome woman already does that here, but I plan to start again as well this year.  Save your stuff!!

Building and cities -  huge topic! – account for a significant percentage of human energy use, mostly for heating and cooling.

Solutions listed below. My favorites are green roofs and bike infrastructure. Green roofs because where I live gets SO hot in the summer, and if we all had green roofs, I could picture the area cooling significantly. For the bike lanes, our are currently skinny additions to the roads, but I know of cities where they are their very own thing. That would be dreamy!

Buildings: Building automation, Green roofs, Heat pumps, insulation, Net zero buildings, Retrofitting, Smart glass, Smart thermostats, Solar hot water.

Cites:  bike infrastructure, District heating, Landfill methane, Walkable cities, Water distribution.
