Regenerative Solutions to Climate Change
Watch the film 2040, a documentary that follows filmmaker, Damon Gameau as he travels the world seeking new approaches and innovations to combat the climate crisis. Concerned with his own daughter’s future, the film is a positive take at what the world could be like if we embrace more regenerative solutions to address the planet’s most pressing environmental issue.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

Donate to Population Connection
Population Connection is an organization that works to empower girls and women to make reproductive choices. They address unmet needs for family planning around the world. According to their website: "Until everyone, everywhere, has access to affordable and appropriate contraceptives, comprehensive reproductive health care, and equal opportunity in education and employment, global environmental crises, food and water shortages, and entrenched poverty will continue unabated. We must dedicate every available resource to advocating in Washington, DC, for dramatic increases in family planning aid and to educating tomorrow’s leaders about the troubling realities of rapid population growth." I usually give a one time donation at the end of the year, but my action on learning about the need for family planning during this challenge called me to donate mid year as well.

Support a Just Transition to Climate-Friendly Agriculture
The deadline for this UUMFE- and UUSJ-sponsored letter writing campaign has been extended to May 10th. Our faith calls us to promote bold action in response to the worsening climate crisis and the glaring racial and socioeconomic inequities revealed by the pandemic. There is growing recognition that changes in our food systems can contribute to progress in fighting climate change. These changes, if done right, can also rectify injustices in our current agricultural systems. As UUs, we insist that the transition to more climate-friendly agriculture also responds to pressing social problems like land loss, racism, unemployment, and hunger. We are urging Senators to support legislation that would make progress on both climate change and social ills, such as the Justice for Black Farmers Act (recently introduced as S. 300) and the Climate Stewardship Act (just re-introduced as S.1072). Take 5 minutes and send your letter now!

Regenerative Gardening
After viewing the films, Kiss the Ground and 2040, I wondered if I could apply regenerative agriculture to my small backyard garden. I found a couple books to peruse but found I couldn't get myself to sit down and read them. Hence, this daily action. If you have a garden, lawn, or pots on the porch, maybe you would be interested in this action as well. DAILY ACTION: read a chapter from a book on regenerative gardening and/or tend your garden using these practices. Some links to books are provided, if you find others, your action is to post that in our team feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Barb Munn 6/30/2021 12:26 PMGreeness has come to be equated with whiteness, driving out lower income residents from areas provided with large scale development in the form of green areas and climate change resilience. Policies prior to development need to be included in any plan that put the people first, include residents in the conversation, and provide for lower income housing within the area being developed (rather than displacing them out of the area through gentrification). I found these two sites interesting, one discusses work done on this in LA and the other highlights NYC: https://shelterforce.org/2020/09/08/green_gentrification/ AND https://wesleyan.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=8c42302e9a1549f7952d74e9bd35c6bd -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Barb Munn 6/29/2021 7:15 PMI already shop at thrift stores for most of my clothing - didn't think about how that is sustainable shopping! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Barb Munn 6/29/2021 11:08 AMI am so glad to have done this action - I was not completely aware of what redlining was and how it led to segregation and cyclic feedbacks leading to poverty and disenfranchisement. Studies showed that areas that were redlined in the 30's went into decline and suffer from a multitude of environmental health problems including higher heat levels (as much as 13 degrees hotter than other areas of a city) due to lack of investment in parks (part of urban planning) - trees in a park lower temperatures due to their ability to absorb heat without raising temperatures (has to do with unique properties of water, which is present in the vegetation in parks). That is just one example of the negative health effects on people unable to receive loans to improve their neighborhoods starting in the 1930's when their neighborhoods were redlined - lots of policy changes (and follow through) are necessary to right these injustices which began so long ago. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Regenerative GardeningWhat did you learn about regenerative gardening? Were you able to put any into practice? How does this relate back to climate action?
Barb Munn 6/10/2021 7:18 PMI learned that the soil is a living thing, so important not to till you garden, but to gently aerate and use lots of compost and mulch to keep your garden healthy. I have mulched around our garden plants and have not pulled vegetables (like lettuce) up by the roots - left the roots in the ground to nurture the microorganisms and bugs that give the soil life. Regenerative gardening could also be called carbon farming - keeping the soil healthy, not tilling or uprooting keeps organic matter (carbon) in the ground where it can nurture future plants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Microgeneration in Low Income CountriesHow can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?
Barb Munn 6/06/2021 7:16 PMInequities are reduced when all have access to reliable energy. Reliable energy also leads to economic stability, which is good for everyone. Also, microgrids use renewable energy which means less fossil fuel is burned. I donated to Green Empowerment - based out of Oregon with a 100 out of 100 rating on Charity Navigator. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Barb Munn 5/31/2021 1:57 PMThe most significant experiences in nature for me have been hiking to the top of something and looking out across the landscape. Definitely gives you focus. The other night we watched the starlink satellites stream in a long chain across the starry sky - I wonder how much more stuff we can put up in orbit over the earth? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Barb Munn 5/31/2021 1:53 PMOn our walks, I have been noticing the birds, flowers, and everybody's gardens. I enjoy just getting outside. Sidewalks would be a plus in the sections that we walk through town, but I am thankful to the people who allow us to walk through their wooded property so I get the feeling of being in the wild for short stretches. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Barb Munn 5/17/2021 2:29 PMThe information about methane digesters showed how things can be created and reused in a closed loop - manure and organic waste put through a digester create biogas, which can be used for electrical power, and solid digestate, which can be used as nutrient-rich fertilizer to grow more food (and create more organic waste) which can be cooked using the energy from the biogas. Sustainbility to me looks like this - no waste products, all have a use. -

Barb Munn 5/14/2021 12:36 PMToday I finished my second book about regenerative gardening. This one was a bit on the technical side and discussed how to make nutrient and mineral-rich amendments from local materials to spray on or drenching your plants. It was over the top for my level of gardening, but maybe I will get there some time in the future! I am going to read about perennials next.
