Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

In my daily practice to reduce my waste, I can:

    Reduce:
    - The amount of times I eat out by buying my own groceries, making my own food, and meal planning. This will lessen my contribution to corporations who are not necessarily mindful of how their operations are wasteful, and in turn the carbon footprint of my packaging is minimized in that I would use a reusable grocery bag, the waste from a week's worth of groceries would be less than the waste produced from eating out nearly every day, alongside making my meals ahead of time.

    Recycle:
I've started to notice that the office I work in hoards a lot of supplies while still ordering more. To that end, I can be sure to keep the current usage of supplies up to par so that they can continue to be used until they can't anymore. This means not restocking pens and pencils until they're scarce and making sure that orders are placed less frequently.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Eating/serving smaller portions means that there will be more food left over for others. If we eat less, we can create a meal for at least one more who doesn't have to experience hunger. Outside of our immediate connections, this means that further up the supply chain, the way food is transported can be redistributed to the hundreds of millions of people who are suffering from hunger and food insecurity, taking away from notions of overconsumptions and balancing resource distribution.

Hello everyone! My name is Kalisha and I am interested in pursuing a sustainable lifestyle because I want to preserve the quality of life that I am used to. I want to be sure that any of the actions I take don't harm the Earth at all. To that end, I am mindful of the food that I eat and the brands that I support. I'm looking forward to seeing how Ecochallenge becomes a part of my daily life as we go through these activities. Thanks for reading!
