Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Industry
Become A Master Recycler/Composter
Recycling
I will sign up for a Master Recycler/Composter program in my area.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
I will avoid buying and using 5 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Marco Olivares 5/18/2021 12:46 AMI really want to prioritize things that don't last forever unlike much of the material "stuff" in my own life. An example would be spending time with my family. No phone. Just focusing on the conversation we're having or the show we're watching. I want to prioritize just living in the moment. I think this will also help me appreciate experiences in the moment rather than when they're over. I think that prioritizing these experiences will help me see things in a new light. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Marco Olivares 5/18/2021 12:39 AMI express my creativity and values in many ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories. For example, I used to shop at thrift stores before they were gentrified. I've noticed that their prices have increased quite a bit. I don't really shop for clothes that often and I regularly donate clothes that don't fit or that I don't wear. I "customize" my jeans by cuffing them which doesn't really put a strain on the planet. I tend to avoid fast fashion. I have recently started buying from more eco-friendly brands like Patagonia and Orvis. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Marco Olivares 5/13/2021 11:25 PMI can refuse to use disposable plastic/ foam and instead opt for better quality reusable options. I can reduce the amount of food waste I produce by making sure my family doesn't buy more food than needed. I can reuse containers such as jars and use them as cups. I can repurpose a cracked coffee mug into a pen holder instead of just throwing it away. I can also recycle plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Become A Master Recycler/ComposterWhat could you do differently to waste less?
Marco Olivares 5/13/2021 11:18 PMI feel like a lot of my waste products definitely come from packaging and plastic bag use. Something I could do differently would be bringing my own grocery/ produce bags when I go shopping. I already tend to avoid plastic bags when I go to the store but there are times when I will forget a reusable bag. I think I should invest in more reusable bags. I also think I should look into reusable produce bags as well, like Tamar. Furthermore, I have noticed that reusable zip bags are also growing in popularity. Although they are pretty expensive, I think they could be a good investment both for me and the planet.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Marco Olivares 5/04/2021 5:42 PMToday, I realized something that had been staring me in the face for the past 7 years. I live in an apartment complex and I came to the realization that we do not have separate trash bins we just have 3 large landfill trash containers. This is different from many homes around the area that organize waste into compost, recyclables, and landfill destined trash. I think it would be a much smarter idea for the apartment complex to implement better ways to dispose of waste such as designated trash bins since we produce as much waste as a regular neighborhood. The manager of my apartment complex is not a very approachable person so I am going to make an effort to take recyclables/compostables to my aunt's house (she has multiple organized trash bins). Hopefully, incorporating this action into my life will help me reduce the waste found in our landfills. This makes me feel good about myself since I am doing my part!-
HARRISON CHU 5/06/2021 11:17 PMHi Marco, it is awesome to hear that you are taking initiative to change something that seems out of your reach. I can definitely also do better by making a point of recycling and composting my respective waste instead of just throwing it in the trash. This might seem a bit unrelated, but I just learned a bit about sustainable fashion and I think it relates to you trying to manage your waste better. Practicing sustainable fashion can reduce the amount of waste you create and lower your overall carbon footprint. I would definitely recommend practices such as thrifting, passing down clothes, and purchasing from companies with ethical and sustainable practices. Best of luck to you as you continue to improve on waste management! -
EMILY INIGUEZ 5/05/2021 9:03 PMHi Marco! Your post made me realize that we truly do not have a widely enforced recycling system that I once thought we, as a country, did. It is very true that not all buildings or homes separate their regular trash from what can be recycled and that bundle of mixed trash all ends up in the regular trash dump, thus adding to the nutrient runoff into the ocean that occurs. I actually visited the site endplasticwaste.org to learn more about the benefits of recycling and realized that there are plastic waste free communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The site additionally is involved in the alliance to end plastic waste where they focus on sustainable waste management solutions in their projects to additionally create jobs and better conditions for the informal waste communities around the world. One of their projects is named Project STOP Jembrana where volunteers are helping build a new waste management system that will serve 160,000 residents in Jembrana and Negara and empower the local community to collect, sort, and sell their own waste. I have been thinking about this project’s mission for some time now and believe that this process of reselling reusable waste or recyclable waste may be a very good way to decrease the amount of plastic waste that leaks into the environment every year. Currently, Project STOP provides a self sufficient system which not only provides around 100 jobs but also prevents around 2,200 tons of waste from leaking into the environment and collects and processes a total of 18,000 tons of waste a year. If these are just the stats for one region of the world, imagine if we implemented these collaborative systems all over the world! We would save and redirect the plastic waste that leaks into the environment and adds to the climate crisis we are currently battling. Also, I think it is a fantastic plan for you and your roommates to separate your landfill because landfilling, as you know, is not a sustainable planning approach as it constitutes the largest source of human caused methane as greenhouse gas is 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. In fact, the EPA actually admitted that all landfill liners will eventually leak and their toxic leachate or garbage juice will seep and contaminate soil and groundwater supplies!

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Marco Olivares 4/22/2021 9:01 PMI regularly use vegetable bags, plastic bags, and plastic water bottles. I can easily substitute the grocery bags with cloth reusable ones. My mom and I also try to throw our trash away in containers it already comes in instead of using a trash bag. I think that using Brita + reusable water bottles would be a good alternative to plastic water bottles. I have tried to include an image of one of our "trash bags" which is actually just a container we bought strawberries in.-

Marco Olivares 4/22/2021 8:50 PMI hope I am doing this right and I'm sorry that I am starting so late.
I joined the challenge because, like many of my classmates, I really want to try and preserve the Earth by doing my part. I think that there's a lot of potential for small actions to add up into one big action. Some of the actions I've currently started doing have been small like reducing the amount of plastic I use + trying to use my hydro flask and coffee thermos as much as possible. However, there are instances in which I do use single-use plastic so I try to give it a couple of uses before disposing of it. I've also tried to cut back on meat consumption because I know it's a big driver of climate change. Overall, I am going to try some of the things Tamar implemented into her life like reusable produce bags. I also make an effort to buy at least one thing that's organic when I go grocery shopping with my family. I chose these actions because they're actions I currently think I am capable of. Hopefully, I'll be able to perform bigger and better actions in the future when I am more financially stable.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Marco Olivares 3/31/2021 11:17 PMWhen I eat mindfully, I tend to take my time which I think helps combat over eating.
