  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I am shocked by the amount of food I was throwing away because it goes bad before we use it.  We've since started a compost pile for our veg garden which will help reduce the amount and I've also realized that I tend to purchase more than we actually use before it goes bad.  I would rather use the money we save on building a larger garden and puchasing canning supplies so that I can help ensure the vegies we grow can be perserved properly and available for our use during our non-summer growing season months.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

In the summer in AK, I shop exclusivly at local farms for vegies that I do not have available in my own veg garden.  I am inspired by the sense of community we have were we trade our veg starts and/or post items that we have in inbundance so that there is minimal waste.  I am inspired to continue learning more about being self-sustained.

Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

I've started my annual veg garden and am trying to rely more on items existing on our property to reduce unnecessary purchasing.  Using the resources I have on hand to make a compost pile, vs taking to the dump and adding to the landfil are ways I can help provide nutrients naturally.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

I enjoyed a meatless week last week and felt "less heavy" after meals.  I did wake up hungry a few times, however, I just need to incorporate other types of proteins and/or more fiber.  I didn't see an impact on others regarding my meal choices last week but do see a benefit to the planet as I'm using my vegie scraps to start a home composting bin which will help fertilize our veg garden.

Understanding these important facts helped me decide what to purchase and when to make it this week!  I tend to purchase too much, when then is wasted.  I am ready to break that habit!
