REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Owen Phelan 12/11/2020 3:16 PMSome human activities that affect the health of water systems include farm fertilizers and pesticides running down into water supplies. In other words, poor farm erosion management. Also, poor sewage management can result in waste (possibly even manure) contaminating the water supply. To improve the health of the water system, I can make sure the mulch the base of my tree stumps. This will increase water infiltration and decrease evaporation. This will decrease erosion of sediment and harmful chemicals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Owen Phelan 12/11/2020 2:59 PMCurrently, what concerns me the most about how we are affecting the planet is the fact that we know all of this new important information, yet much of our population will just consider it to be fake news. This is so frustrating! This is why it is important to make sure that as many people as possible are educated on our current environmental situation. In other words, while I feel that we are making a lot of progress in our understanding of our environment, convincing people to believe it is a whole other challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Owen Phelan 12/10/2020 9:51 AMAnother benefit that comes from this is that you can increase the amount of dishes that you can wash in a single dishwasher load. This increases productivity, water savings, power savings, and financial savings. Also, it is more healthy to not eat as large portions, which can help with our country's obsitety problem in the long run. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Owen Phelan 12/10/2020 9:39 AMI had actually not heard of the term “silvopasture” before, but now not only do I know what it means, but also how productive they can be. Farmers can grow a lot more crops to keep up with demand all while using less land, for silvopastures are multidimensional. In other words, silvopastures can account for many products on the same square of land. However, perhaps the biggest benefit of these pastures is the environmental impact. The trees in the pasture help counterbalance the methane releases from the livestock, which can significantly help in the fight against global warming, for methane is a big contributor to the greenhouse effect. All in all, I feel that silvopastures are super productive and green, and that more farmers should convert over to this method. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Owen Phelan 12/10/2020 7:16 AMI have learned that refrigerants can have a huge impact on our atmosphere, more specifically the ozone layer, for CFCs eat through that layer, causing an increase in skin cancers and serious eye issues. Also, HFCs significantly play a role in the growing global warming issue, so we really need to develop alternatives to these refrigerants. While I didn't learn too much about this, I believe that supermarkets contribute to this impact by continuing to sell products that contain CFCs and HFCs, even though newer, more environmentally friendly technology is available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Owen Phelan 12/04/2020 10:15 AMMy vision of a sustainable community looks like people relying on clean, renewable energy as their main source of energy. The air would be clean, people would be satisfied, and we could put otherwise harmful gases (such as methane) to good use. In order to make this vision become a reality, people would need to be open to transferring over to a renewable energy source. I could encourage them to learn more about the benefits of this type of energy, perhaps that could push them to make the change. However, these systems are currently expensive, so I would have to work with my community to try and make these systems more available. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Owen Phelan 12/04/2020 9:31 AMI learned a lot today about the need for family planning. For one, I learned that the vast majority of teen pregnancies are unplanned for, even when the state provides a plentiful supply of contraceptives. This is because these contraceptives are either too expensive, or when they are affordable, are not reliable enough. This is also why we see more teen pregnancies happening in poorer regions, for many young women do not have access to quality contraceptives in these areas. This is also why many initiatives and organizations are focusing on regions in poverty, for they are at a greater need at the moment. Luckily, organizations such as the UNFPA are working hard to provide a wide access to quality contraceptives, truthful sex education, child care, and health care services. If we continue to work on this issue, not only can we increase our resources and decrease poverty, but we can also continue to strengthen women's rights! Now that’s super exciting! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Owen Phelan 12/04/2020 8:46 AMAs I continue to learn about all of the horrible things that we are doing to our environment, it definitely makes me feel concerned for our future. I feel like if we continue to develop into these super important biomes and environments, we will lose all of the benefits that they provide for us, and, if we continue on like this, will our planet even be livable anymore? It’s these thoughts that make me feel much more stressed out about this situation. I knew that it was bad, but by further researching it, I now feel like I know a much wider scope of the situation, which definitely pushes me to make a difference and begin fighting this battle! I feel that the part that feels most overwhelming to me is the fact that many people are saying that it is up to our generation and that it is our job to fix what was done. I understand that we really do have to change, but it definitely feels overwhelming (and a bit unfair) when you look at all of the work that previous generations have left us to do. However, I haven’t lost all hope. In fact, I am very hopeful in many regards. For one, we have seen major advancements in technologies (such as solar power and biofuels) that we are actually putting to action. Not only does this mean that we are solving our energy problem, but also that people are actually willing to change. Also, we are seeing more and more organizations pushing people to change their normal ways of living (including this ecochallenge!) and I feel that we really are making progress. We just need to make a lot more of it if we are going to clean up all of the mess that we have made. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Owen Phelan 12/04/2020 7:40 AMEven though I live far away from peatlands, I can still make decisions to help protect them. For one, I can choose to only buy products that don’t contain palm oil and instead contain less harmful substitutes. This gives less power to the plantations that are overtaking the peatlands, and, if everyone practices this, it can cause those companies to lose a lot of money, perhaps increasing the likelihood of less palm oil plants (and more peatlands) in the future. Also, I can donate to organizations that are working hard to save our peatlands (a women based one would be awesome!) to help them with their cause. Stop taking away our peatlands! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Owen Phelan 12/03/2020 3:10 PMI have learned that there are many barriers that exist regarding women equality. For one, old traditions and religions can oftentimes overpower equality, and while these religions can be super important to cultures, we have to learn to make some exceptions in order to keep progressing. I mean, we only make half as much progress if we leave women out of the picture! Also, the pandemic can lead to backwards steps being taken in regards to women being treated equally. This is especially relevant in poorer, developing countries where abusive homes are more common. Add in the fact that these girls have to stay in their homes during the pandemic, and you see a large increase in abuse and a decrease in women fairness, equality, and progress. All in all, I feel that without men and women being completely equal and on the same page, we are making a lot less progress than we could be. This has to change!
