Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

We have been composting at home for several years. For the past year we are also using the industrial compost bins at the Acton transfer station for things  like  bones, pineapple skin and other hard to break down waste.

Good job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?

I belong to Green Acton, an environmental group, and we are looking at the materials we use in our organization. Last night at a Zoom meeting we put using post consumer paper on our list. Also the I'm on the steering committee of League of Women voters-Acton Area and helped  establish a sustainability policy based on the LWV state policy that includes reducing paper use, including using post consumer paper and  re-using  the back side of printed paper..
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Maintaining a healthy body weight.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

I will freeze vegetable skins, tops and stalks to use when I make vegetable broth.
