Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Davy Ray 4/21/2021 7:31 AMI have really enjoyed this challenge and have participated for almost 30 days! Last night I was able to walk through the fort all the way to market square and back. Walkability was accessible and exciting! The crosswalk near the Sun sphere that takes you over to the market square side takes away the anxiety of crossing the busy intersection! -
Davy Ray 4/10/2021 3:45 PMThis challenge is becoming easier to do and I am becoming more and more appreciative that I chose it. Being able to live in a place that has pretty great infrastructure to walk throughout is something that I can only dream of if I was still living in my hometown. The only way to access anything is by car, and sadly this is true for many cities and towns in the USA. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Davy Ray 4/06/2021 10:33 AMI primarily take walks through the fort, where I live, just right off of campus. I have enjoyed getting to look at houses in this area and people watch! I think the fort is a pretty good example of a walkable area already, but more greenery and patching certain areas of pavement could definitely make my walks more enjoyable and possible. -
Davy Ray 4/06/2021 10:29 AMI am really enjoying my daily action! Quarantine has greatly increased my appreciation for the "attractions" that are possible to walk to in my area. Doing this challenge has been extremely beneficial for me and I am saving gasoline for needed trips! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Davy Ray 3/23/2021 8:55 PMListening to the sounds of the outdoors and watching the environment quite literally "breathe" makes it easy for a person to achieve a sense of tranquility and appreciation of its complex network. The outdoors and its elements are what we evolved and experienced for millions of years before society created entirely humanistic areas in the world. Spending time outdoors forces you want to gain knowledge of and to recognize what humans truly rely on for the entirety of their survival. -
Davy Ray 3/23/2021 8:42 PMThis challenge was entirely successful, besides the fact that shortly after this picture was taken, I accidentally gave myself a black eye. The past year has been a challenge for millions of people, myself included. I saw the healing and renewal category and knew I had to pursue challenges under it, because I have been nonstop trying to do beneficial things for my personal growth and healing in the past year during all of its chaos. Exploring my area needed to be more extreme than driving 10 minutes down the road to visit Ijams, so I decided that I had to drive to the Smoky Mountains and hike the Chimney Tops instead. This hike is one of the best that the Smoky Mountains has to offer, providing a challenging trail with a destination that has a uniquely breathtaking view of this area in just under 2 miles. I was able to witness a beautiful river weaving in and out of the first major portion of the trail, brightly colored moss, fungi, and even a mother black bear and her two cubs (who minded their own business and never disturbed anyone on the trail)! I chose a favorite tree: extremely large, with a knot as big as a Volkswagen bug on it. It was ginormous. I cannot imagine a better way to have successfully completed this one-time challenge.
