Tomorrow is my final day for the 21 day Eco-Challenge of smaller portions resulting in reduced food waste. As I stated in my last post, this challenge has resulted in a lifestyle change. I have noticed many differences since beginning the challenge. Most noted is that I have lost a few pounds and I can tell I have not thrown out as many groceries that have expired. The smaller portions has also resulted in me being able to make my grocery go longer which has allowed me to save money. Overall, I believe this challenge has been a success for me.

I watch the video, "Powered by Poop" to be understand methane digesters. After watching the video it is evident that there are many benefits of methane digesters. These benefits include converting nutrients into waste which not only better protects humans and animal health from reducing hazardous waste but also increases crop productivity by converting the waste nutrient's into accessible forms for farming.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

When I eat mindfully, I'm more intune with the amount of food I am consuming.

My drawdown eco-challenge of eating smaller portions has aided in a lifestyle change. This started as just a goal for 21 days and turned into me trying to be conscious of myself and the environment for every meal.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

My vision of a sustainable community is a community that practices what they preach. I watched the video Powered by Poop: Using methane digesters to turn dairy cows; waste into electricity. It was noted that in this video the dairy farmer uses every ounce possible of the cow including the dairy for milk and they send a portion to be branded into cheese with the remainder being sold to create more products. They then take the manure to produce power. This process embodies the idea of sustainability. I think in order for this vision to become reality, it is important for people to take practices like this dairy farmer of not being wasteful and using otherwise harmful processes to the environment to be repurposed in order to reduce greenhouse gases.

Since beginning my daily action of using a smaller plate to promote smaller portions, I have seen various improvements such as weight lost and groceries lasting longer than usual. By being conscious in consuming smaller portions, I not only feel better but I am no longer wasting as much food which makes me feel like I am doing a better job in conservation and sustainability in my daily life.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Personally, I tend to overeat when using normal sized plates. By using a smaller plate this tricks my mind into eating/serving smaller portions. So using smaller plates not only has environmental benefits but also health benefits.
