Kathryn's actions
Materials
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Transport
Conduct Virtual Meetings
Telepresence
I will encourage my office to hold meetings virtually whenever possible instead of requiring travel.
Women and Girls
Connect With A Nonprofit
Health and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, and/or trans/nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Materials
Become A Master Recycler/Composter
Recycling
I will sign up for a Master Recycler/Composter program in my area.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Materials
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Electricity Generation
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Materials
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
I will avoid buying and using 4 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Nutrient Management
Nutrient Management
I will research and support local farmers who have made the decision to not use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
Health and Education
Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
Health and Education
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning more about the barriers to women's equal participation and representation around the world.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kathryn Rogers 8/31/2020 6:09 PMWe connected with a nonprofit in Haiti this week whose aim is to bring STEM education to the children of their country. Haiti is labeled as a fourth world country. It will be interesting to learn what we (as environmentally conscience people) can do to help. -
Kathryn Rogers 8/29/2020 2:24 PMYesterday we saw some spotted lantern flies in Hamilton. They are not native and will eat all foliage in site but they love ornamental shrubs and fruit trees. I am going to try an eco-friendly method of getting rid of them from my trees. I am doing my research now, but they have to go.-
Shreya Karnam 9/12/2020 7:51 AMWe recently spotted a spotted lantern fly near our house, and we exterminated it by unfortunate chemical means. If you do happen to come across an eco-friendly method to get rid of them, please let me know so we can utilize that as well! :)

Kathryn Rogers 8/11/2020 10:15 AMDuring the pandemic many people are having food and groceries delivered directly to their homes. I have noticed that while this is convenient and safer, the stores are using a lot of eco-unfriendly materials to keep foods cool or hot. However, today I got a cold box and all packing materials in it could go into the regular recycling bins....triangles 1 & 2 for our community. Not only that, just in case the crew that picks up the recycling each week was confused (because it looks like eco-unfriendly materials) the company has huge recycle triangles with #1 inside on the packing materials! Really hard to be confused about that!

Kathryn Rogers 8/10/2020 6:49 AMI was able to get a large floor rug made out of recycled plastic. I didn't even know they existed until now. It is soft, flexible and waterproof. Not only that my cat loves the feel of it too.-
Tanya Vijay 8/11/2020 5:57 AMWow, cool!

Kathryn Rogers 8/06/2020 12:25 PMWe have done so many virtual meetings and everything else that I think I have forgotten how to actually drive a car! -
Kathryn Rogers 8/04/2020 6:25 AMHurricane advantage today: Lots of water for my rain barrel. -
Kathryn Rogers 7/18/2020 10:04 AMWe are in the midst of a heatwave this week. I am researching ways to keep cool and still be energy efficient. I also have a lawn and plants that need extra water. Today I am finally going to get to use the water in my new rain barrel collection system. -
Kathryn Rogers 7/14/2020 9:17 AMToday is the official kickoff of my composting project. The composting barrels are ready and the kitchen scrap bucket is ready. I have learned what to compost and what not to compost. I am ready! -
Kathryn Rogers 7/08/2020 12:51 PMToday I did some research on geothermal energy to heat and cool our homes. I would like to design and build an eco-friendly house that used geothermal heat & cooling. Solar panels or wind energy could also supply energy to run the geothermal pumps and everything else. I also looked into Iceland where they use a lot of geothermal energy. I would definitely like to visit that country.-
Shreya Karnam 7/18/2020 9:48 AMIt's funny how I always used to think Iceland was made of ice. :) But yes, Iceland is definitely very eco-friendly!
