REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 7:30 PMOne thing that I can do is when using maybe the head of a cabbage, chop up the head so that you can use how every much you can and add it to maybe a slaw. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 6:37 PMI noticed a slight one that is kind of silly but also a little serious. I noticed that the animals that come to my families garden sometimes don't always run away. The rabbits that come for our vegetables will stay and look at my dad because he always gives them food but also I noticed that when it would rain most of our plants would rise. Yes it was very slow but it still happened and was quite cool. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 6:33 PMOne thing I noticed is that where I live bears are very active because I say four ripped trash bags laying on the road. But I also noticed that it was a good way to clear your mind especially if you are alone. One thing that I would change would be to maybe bring one of my dogs or listen to music while I am walking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 6:28 PMWell eating meals with out distractions is pretty much the same as eating with family except not everyone talks. It is a little more peaceful and normally doesn't last as long but it felt good to do it more than once. It also seems to be a little bit more boring around breakfast time when there is no one eating with me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 6:21 PMIt will positively affect me because it is much healthier than eating a bunch of fatty meats. It will help other people because, well in my family that means they they will be able to have more but for a variety that means farmers dont have to raise as many cows just to slaughter if that inspires people to do it. It will help the world by meaning less people need to eat meat there for we dont require all of the animals dying and cooking, shipping them things like that will not have to be so hard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Lucas Rogers 12/09/2020 5:10 PMWe can start by using more solar energy as well as wind powered energy because we live in the mountains so those things are very easy to come by. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Lucas Rogers 12/08/2020 6:34 PMI have never heard of the term silvopasture. I think the biggest advantage is climate mitigation. It reduces emissions of sequestering carbon which is the process of removing CO2 from the atmosphere thereby reducing the impact of change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Lucas Rogers 12/08/2020 6:19 PMWhat concerns me the most is that it seems that most of the people in power don't seem to care about how we are destroying the earth. Globally only a handful of places will acknowledge the fact that there is climate change and the waters are polluted. Locally we see the problems but we still don't do hardly anything about them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Lucas Rogers 12/08/2020 6:00 PMMy vision of a sustainable community is a almost completely green earth. using energy like wind and solar to power are cities and some vehicles ( some of course would be be powered by some form of waste). In order to obtain this we need to step by step increase our use of solar energy and there is no reason we shouldn't because the earth is heating. Another part is cleaner water and in order to obtain this we need to do things like having treatment plants but also a place to put the bad water to use in another form of energy like ( and I know how gross this is) a small river of running waste water that is constantly powering it so that it can still be used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Lucas Rogers 12/08/2020 5:04 PMI learned that refrigerants were a lot worse for the environment than I thought. I mainly thought that it was the light and some the energy it produce that causes all of of the carbon in the air, which yes is true, but I learned a lot about CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons). Super markets have a lot of frozen goods and other things that need to be cooled off, but most of the doors are open requiring them to use more energy so that all the things are cooled with them not being able to be compacted in the cold.
