What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

I think the ideal situation is if everyone was able to have some form of sustainable energy(Solar, Wind, Geo). In order for that to work prices of those would probably need to be reduced so that alternative energies become affordable and easily accessible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Charlotte Ross 12/04/2020 4:03 PM
I have started thinking about what I can do individually to help small things like making sure everything I throw away can't be recycled. There is so much that has to be done and we have a time stamp on it all and if we don’t get it done we are majorly hurting the earth and there will be no way to reverse it. I feel hopeful in someway one of which is we just got a new president who believes in science and will make an effort to change the current state and make the earth a greener place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 12/04/2020 1:41 PM
Family planning is an essential and basic human right. Some people have much less control over their reproductive and overall health. Even though everyone is in a different boat people need the same basic essentials.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 11/30/2020 4:55 PM
Most household emissions such as Nuclear, some solar, and hydroelectric. You can read articles watch videos and just do more research to see what you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Choose Recycled Paper
Good job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 11/30/2020 4:50 PM
There are many things we can do, reuse paper, reuse jars, and cans and check everything to see if we can recycle it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Launch a Recycling Program
How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 11/30/2020 3:59 PM
I think it's really important to talk to living facilities that handle MANY people and see what they can do. Maybe install Solar panels to save more money or start if they don't already have a recycling program.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

It scares me that one day this will all be too much and we will have pushed the earth to its limit and we don't what will happen. It also scares me that many people don't believe or do anything to stop climate change and I fear that by the time they realize it will be too late.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Connect With A Nonprofit
What are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 11/30/2020 3:39 PM
One of the most pressing issues I saw was health benefits. Especially for trans and nonbinary women, many costs have to be out of pocket which means they are not covered by insurance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Charlotte Ross's avatar
    Charlotte Ross 11/30/2020 3:08 PM
Potatoes and many other thongs have edible skins so you can actually use and eat the skins.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

Women's and men's pay can be extremely different depending on your job or where you work. The United States as a whole has made lots of progress in the past 5 to 10 years with equal pay. Another one can be whether or not you get a specific job due to your gender, some companies take into account if you have kids and they don't want to give you leave and a lot of women don't even want kids but as I said I think we have made large strives away from that recently.
