Protect our watershed - learn and do

The Tualatin watershed is crucial to our community's well-being. Learn more about the conservation and restoration activities of the past and present that are ensuring the health of our watershed. Pick an action from the following options: 1) Switch to organic or slow-release fertilizers, 2) Replace a non-permeable surface with a permeable one, 3) Always pick up after pets (if you notice a location, park, or greenspace with a pet waste problem, find a way to improve the disposal infrastructure), 4) Plant tough/hardy plants that require little or no extra water/fertilizer, 5) Use roof water or greywater in the garden instead of having it run directly to the street or down the drain.

LEARN MORE ABOUT PLASTICS IN THE WASTE STREAM

The history of recycling programs is complex. Much of the confusion about what is and isn't recyclable started decades ago. Take some time time to learn about the evolution of plastic recycling efforts. Click 'learn more' for suggested videos and articles.

Did not find the articles on this one very useful - it's a mess and no obvious solutions was kind of what I got out of it.  Would have been nice to highlight some things people are doing or have a virtual tour of a recycling operation or something more hopeful and forward looking.

The impact of rice production and that there are solutions out there to improve this in a big way.  Also the numbers on food waste - I've heard before but it's shocking every time you see it.  I wonder how the current stay at home situation is impacting those numbers.

Just listened to a Association of Oregon Recyclers webinar.  The panel was comprised of local leaders in the various arms of the waste management industry.  A local hauler reported that home food waste is way up while, not surprisingly, business food waste is down (people aren't in those places of business right now.)  We still have much outreach to do on food waste prevention.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

Like all the ideas from reading these articles - methane digesters, biomass, silvoculture, etc. plus of course solar and wind energy and growing your own food.  Would be great to see all future buildings required to get to net zero or something close to it and have conversion solutions for existing buildings both commercial and residential.  Sounds there are a lot of things happening but there needs to be a lot more advertising and awareness that these things are out there and they need to be straightforward to implement.  Also needs to be financial incentives and funding help and a whole shift in thinking and a crisis or big event to shake people up to get them open to thinking differently.  There is a huge opportunity for new careers and jobs here along with of course saving the planet but getting this level of change is a very hard problem.

Implementing sustainable features can be heavier on upfront investments but then more than pay for themselves in terms of dollars and environmental benefits as time passes.  Thinking in these terms is challenging for individuals and businesses alike.  Are there organizations out there that help people with financing sustainable fixes and upgrades?  Something to look into and promote if there are.

A little but didn't know much.  I knew methane was bad but didn't realize how much worse than CO2 emissions.  Also nice to see at least one positive story from US with hog farm stuff happening in North Carolina.  Loved the Rwanda story and the thought that all big buildings (or an area of a town/city) could take their waste and turn it back into energy for a closed loop system.  Have been watching some sustainable building/design type shows recently and this fits right in with that.

Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

Never heard of it before - fascinating (and disturbing that I hadn't heard of it when it sounds like such a good thing).  More/better quality production for both the animals and plants, biodiversity helps climate and reduces farmer risk (more crops with different harvest times in one area), less chemicals, helps with and is less susceptible to effects of climate change
