REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Pierce Ruch 12/09/2020 3:10 PMI have not heard of it before. I think, from a global perspective, the greatest advantage is the higher sequestering rates. But from the farmer’s perspective, it could either be about the welfare of the cows, or the higher financial output. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Pierce Ruch 12/04/2020 1:03 PMMy vision is for everyone to use water power or wave power because we have a small stream that runs through our neighborhood. The problem is, even if the stream grew a lot in size, we would only have enough energy for like 1 house. Therefore, I think we should use solar energy. We just have to buy them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Pierce Ruch 12/04/2020 5:17 AMI learned that family planning is considered a right by society, and also that in developing countries, they don't have access to all the stuff that developed countries have. Also the ideals may be different in different areas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Pierce Ruch 12/04/2020 4:56 AMIt makes me feel guilty for not doing anything. I am worried though because it's not something I can do alone. I am hopeful because there are a lot of organizations already doing stuff about it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Pierce Ruch 12/04/2020 4:34 AMSupport the preservation of peatlands through activism and social media. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Pierce Ruch 12/02/2020 4:10 PMOld traditions, stereotypes, mindset. Otherwise, my community is pretty good as far as I know. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Pierce Ruch 11/30/2020 1:57 PMWell we are slowly killing off all life on this planet and that is not okay with me. Also Asheville doesn't ever get snow anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Pierce Ruch 11/28/2020 2:15 PMI learned that refrigerants destroy the ozone that God put there to protect us from UV rays. Supermarkets use these a lot and can accidentally put them into the atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Pierce Ruch 11/28/2020 1:18 PMI currently don’t eat meat, so that’s good. I could switch to a completely plant based diet instead, which would be difficult. I could also convince my family to switch to a different diet as they don’t have diet restrictions. -
