"I try my best to remain informed on the way we can take care of our environment. Growing up, I only heard about recycling plastic and how that can help our planet. However, now I realize there's so much more we can do by changing the way we do the smallest tasks and how making even the smallest changes can benefit us all. "

For our generation, I have found going paperless pretty easy. A few things I can now find online in my email or accounts instead of having them sent to me through the mail are; paystubs, credit card statements, receipts, w-2 tax forms, calendars, and e-signed documents. This is highly convenient because I tend to misplace all my papers, and having everything accessible online makes me less worried about losing important documents. Also, I live in a small apartment, so not receiving all of this helps by not having to find a place for it at home. Regarding receipts, I love receiving them through email because if I ever need to return anything, I don't have to stress about finding the physical copy. Then with credit card statements, you tend to receive them earlier when you choose the paperless option, which helps with not falling behind on any payments! Now when it comes to calendar apps, I use mine every day! I enjoy planning my week and using my virtual calendar, as I can choose different fonts and styles, check it from any of my electronics, and never lose it. Going paperless helps our environment and dramatically reduces the amount of paper we use, mainly because we will throw this paper out either way.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

For this entire quarter, I tried to do my best to eat my food with no distractions throughout all of my meals for the day (it was a struggle). As someone who used to watch tv or scroll through social media while they ate, this was a difficult habit to fix. Not using my phone during meals was easier than not watching tv while I ate. I would let my phone's battery run out or turn it off. However, I did notice a positive diffference when eating with no distractions. I would actually enjoy my food and finish eating a bit faster (in a good way), it's not that I was rushing on purpose or anything, but I was able to take good bites of my food and enjoy the process. Also, something I began to notice with the amount of food I ate was I would eat slightly less amount than usual and feel full! I think it concerns my body being more aware of how much food I need. Sometimes these distractions can cause us to accidentally overeat, resulting in wasting more food than we need to and possibly feeling sick. I understand that we sometimes rush to eat because we are busy and in a hurry, but taking the time to eat without any distractions definitely has its benefits.

I am currently moving into my new apartment in Westwood, so exciting but kind of stressful when it comes to finding the right furniture. One of my main concerns when shopping for furniture is finding affordable pieces. However, I've recently learned that sometimes buying furniture made of cheap wood can hurt our environment, but can also hurt us because of the toxic chemicals it contains. After scrolling through many furniture options, I also noticed that bamboo products can also be a lot more cheaper than those made of other materials. So now, that I have purchased my furniture I kept both of these things in mind. I just finished ordering a bamboo bed frame, a matching bamboo coffee table, and some bamboo coasters! I am so excited to receive these because I know it will make my apartment look nicer. I actually learned about bamboo products through news articles about moving into a new apartment. I think if we all focused a bit more on what we use in our homes such as buying sustainable furniture, we can help better our environment and our homes!

Hi Nadia! I absolutely love this! I think its really easy to forget about the impacts that every day objects hold on the environment especially things like furniture since its often not highlighted as something that impacts the climate so taking the time to look at different aspects of your life and how the things your are purchasing might be impacting the environment is really awesome. I never put too much time into how furniture could impact our Earth so it was great haring about it and alternatives and I will definitely be keeping this in mind as I make my move to my new apartment next year and in the future. I might even make my family consider investing in more sustainable options rather than the basic cheap and typical Ikea pieces we usually get.

My favorite band is Coldplay, so I will be going to their concert in Seattle, Washington in September because Seattle tickets are cheaper than LA tickets (also because my friends and I thought it would cool to visit Seattle). We were planning on flying to Seattle, BUT we saw a video of the views from the Amtrak train ride from LA to Seattle and we were swayed. The train passes by the coast, we can eat on the train (pretty good menu), and sleep on the train. It is a longer trip, but I think it will be such an amazing (and affordable) trip! I am so used to flying to destinations for trips, but I think this can become a cool hobby and maybe I'll end up signing up for their membership. While booking my trip and finding more information about the Amtrak, I learned that the Amtrak produces up to 83% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than driving and up to 73% than flying, making the Amtrak a good option in order to reduce my travel carbon footprint.

Sometimes we forget that others aren't as fortunate as us. I was able to afford attending decent schools from K-12th and even now at UCLA , I am fortunate enough to not have to worry about paying for my education (well as much as others). Once I got to high school, I realized some of my friends chose to not attend their dream universities because of their financial struggles, they didn't want to stress about student loans or debt. Of course, this is worse in underdeveloped countries and places with serious income gaps. I have always wanted to try and do my part and help make school more affordable/accessible. Which is why, I am a mentor for the Mentorship Program (Club) at UCLA. As mentors we are required to raise a certain amount of money, so we can combine all the funds and provide scholarships to our high school students who are so close to attending college! I am also currently assigned to a 13 year old mentee who is in 8th grade and she is very much enthusiastic about becoming an animal psychologist. I always try my best to encourage her to follow her dreams and support her.

As someone who loves to drink matcha or any type of tea really, I try to be more considerate with the amount of plastic cups and straws that I use. I like how Starbucks stopped providing straws unless you ask them for one, and even though I enjoy using the new lids which you can drink from they are still made from plastic. So, I've started to make my OWN matcha lattes from match powder that I order online! This matcha brand also uses compostable packaging! Making my own matcha is pretty fun and not as expensive, and I can also make as much as I want! Because I've been able to make my own drinks now, I use my reusable cup and straw, this helps me with greatly reducing the amount of plastic cups and straws I use a week. I love that I've made the choice to purchase my own matcha powder, a (cute pink) reusable cup, and 2 reusable straws. It's definitely more convenient and helps me save lots of money weekly, so now I'm saving up to buy more things.

I love that you make your own matcha tea now! I have a similar thing going for almost all of the tea and coffee I consume. Making it myself at home is less expensive and more convenient in the sense that it doesn't require me stepping out of my house - I just put my mug under the Keurig machine (that I split with 4 of my other roommates) and I can even pick the flavor of coffee/tea to make that day based on the coffee pod I use - and the cost of a mug made in such a way is usually about $1-$1.5 compared to the $6-12 I would have spent at a tea/coffee shop. Buying from coffee shops also adds on an additional cup/straw that we end up throwing away after a single use anyways, so I guess this does end up being more eco-friendly as well. I just have to wash my ceramic mug after I'm done which uses a little bit of water but that's fine I guess.
On a side note - for those who love straws - Costco also sells these "Coleman tumblers" which come with reusable hard plastic straws that can be re-used almost indefinitely - mine's going strong for over half a year now :)

I was born and raised in LA. My family and I haven't always lived in the Westwood/Brentwood area, we also lived in DTLA. Due to being able to reside in different areas, I've noticed how some residents might really depend on their cars to get around their own neighborhoods. While living in DTLA, I didn't feel safe enough to walk around late at night or go on runs early in the morning. However, now that I'm living in the Brentwood area, I walk to the grocery store, go on runs, and even walk to school without feeling unsafe. I've also been able to learn more about cool places near me (like boba and ice cream :p). I realize I have the privilege of safely walking around my neighborhood, and now I try my best to walk everywhere because it's financially and physically beneficial for me and our environment! This change has helped me understand deeper issues we must fix so everyone can participate in limiting climate change.

Hi Nadia! I can relate to your post as I grew up in an area where I felt unsafe to walk and was always taught to never go out alone. However, moving to Westwood provided me with a safe environment in which I enjoy the privilege of being able to walk to my friends' apartments, restaurants in Westwood, or even the campus library late at night without much worry. I try my best to take advantage of this and walk to places whenever I can. I usually incentivize myself by thinking of it as a free workout! I do agree that part of the reason why transportation is such a big contributor to climate change is because of deeper issues within society. Many people do not feel safe or comfortable exploring other transportation options besides a car. I think that being able to combat this issue is something that will take time and require collaboration from all of society.
