Listen to the Planet Money Podcast – “Sell Me Your Climate Bombs”

Planet Money recently interviewed the co-founders of Tradewater to learn about the dangerous impact that old refrigerants have on our environment. I will listen to the podcast to learn more about this necessary solution in fighting a climate crisis.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

My vision of a sustainable community looks like one who's actions positively impact the earth and contribute to solving climate change. Some of these could include composting, improvement of recycling centers, pedestrian friendly neighbourhoods (for walking and biking to various places with ease). I believe that a lot would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality, but primarily having politicians in local and provincial positions truly care about climate issues and making change.

Each language learner will surely have their unique techniques for remembering words from letters meanings, word faces, and word usage. The context will determine the appropriate meaning for each statement.

What was the most surprising thing you learned from this podcast?

The most surprising thing I learned from this podcast was how such an invisible threat can make such a large impact on the environment and affect climate change. While refrigerants are no longer produced, they used to be used in old refrigerators, air conditioners,  A/C in old cars. Many of the old ones are now left rusting, which cause the gas inside to possibly leak out into the atmosphere. This has such a large effect on the environment as refrigerants have up to 10,000 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide!

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

What concerns me most about how we are affecting the planet is just how severe the impact will be and how globally how many people are unaware or undisturbed/unaffected by the predictions of climate change. I believe that locally, provincially and nation-wide, people are having a hard time realizing that they need to make changes in their lifestyle, including their day to day. People are hesitant to make change and take action, despite it being for such an important cause.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Sarah S's avatar
    Sarah S 4/01/2022 4:14 PM
People in richer countries tend to eat more meat than people in other places as it is a more costly food item. Eating meat can negatively affect our bodies. For example, it is known to be linked to diseases such as cancer, particularly raw and red meats. It is also something that negatively affects our planet and therefore other people, requiring many resources to be produced (removal of trees for grazing, water, etc...) and producing emissions.

People in rich countries often eat more meat, which is the cause of diseases such as obesity and cancer. That negatively affects our planet. Generating a lot of emissions, natural resources are destroyed to raise livestock and poultry. They gradually resemble a slope ball. There should be propaganda about the dangers of eating too much meat, especially raw meat.
