Calculate the carbon footprint of my household

I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Electricity

Choose LED Bulbs

LED Lighting

I will replace 8 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Smaller Portions

Reduced Food Waste

I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

    Hello-
Carbon Footprint is defined as- the amount of carbon dioxide or other carbon compounds emitted due to use of fossil fuels by group or person. Based on this my carbon footprint is calculated on the daily usage; car, home heating and gas. Then there is indirectly, such as things I buy and food consumption. I used online carbon calculator to calculate my carbon footprint.
Based on it i can reduce my carbon print by changing my magazine subscription to online only. Going Paperless will reduce emissions created in the process of creating paper and printing also reducing the elimination of trees.
Secondly to effect second hand or indirect carbon foot print, I can shop more sustainable. Not only on electrics or clothes but food as well. Such as Apple is already combating this topic- by eliminating all paper waste already, spending 250 million to repopulate the forest and lastly has a goal of making all their products 100% recycle made by 2025. In food choices I can not only choose to shop from local farmer markets, because we must consider the carbon foot print of shipping and distribution( cargo ships, planes, trucks). By shopping local- I will cut down on my contribution toward that.

Next I will focus on other ways to reduce my carbon foot print; such as unplugging things from outlets, and looking into solar solutions.

Planting trees is good for your

Mental Health: The task requires focus, allows one to melt away all stress and busy noise of life and be present.

Physical:  It is a workout digging and planting a tree.

Spiritual: You are connecting with the earth, the one that provides life not just to you but all living things. You really get to your roots.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Reduce- my carbon footprint by switching to electric vehicle.

    Refuse- To use plastic straw.

Repair - a garden, by planting trees.

Repurpose- coffee ground to use in planting.

Implementing these R's as made more mindful and look toward finding more solutions.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions always less food to go to waste(as you will be less likely to throw food out and finish your plate). Health wise calorie consumption will be lower which may lead to weight lost and/or other health benefits.
