Carmine Salamone 4/07/2022 7:29 PMHello Professor Sheridan,
The following is my week ten blog post number seven on the eco-challenge reflection questions.
Action Track: Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – Support Organic Growing Methods
§ It is often said that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.”
§ What is your response to that statement?
As Project Drawdown (2022) mentions:
The statement that you cannot feed the world with just organic food does not seem correct to me. There are many ways to feed the world with just organic foods. People can reduce their food waste to make more organic food available to others. People could also reduce their attention to their mobile devices and increase their attention on what they are eating to reduce the amount of food they consume. People could also tend their own garden to make more organic foods available to their family and friends. Also, people could reduce their food options that they serve through using smaller dishes when serving others, saving organic foods that are not necessarily needed to be served.
People could also only cook what they are going to eat instead of extra organic food items that they do not necessarily need to cook. People also could learn more about sell by and use by dates to increase the amount of time it is kept before it is thrown away increasing available organic foods and reducing the necessity to buy more organic foods helping to save more for others. Also, people when tending to their garden, instead of wasting spoiled organic fruit and vegetables, people can put them in their garden as natural organic composting materials. All these collectively will have an extremely helpful effect on people contribution to assuring organics are available to all.
Now we can speak to the over utilization of nitrogen fertilizers in the agriculture industry. This over utilization of nitrogen-based fertilizers in the agriculture industry creates nitrous oxide, which is bad for the environment. These nitrous oxide emission from the nitrogen fertilizer used in the agriculture industry contribute to the poor emission in the agriculture industry. The solution would be to stop the emissions of these nitrogen-based fertilizers and eventually cease production of these nitrogen-based fertilizers as well. The end of production of these nitrogen-based fertilizers in the agriculture industry would reduce the energy waste during the production process of this nitrogen fertilizer, which is very energy intensive.
These nitrogen fertilizers utilized by agriculturists are popular because they increase crop yields, but not without the following issues: these nitrogen fertilizers kill the organic matter within the soils. These nitrogen fertilizers also make their way into the water causing algae blooms and removing of oxygen from water, which cause the large masses of fish dying in swaths across the globe. Also, nitrogen fertilizers utilized in agriculture are a cause of global warming due to the nitrogen in the fertilizer converting bacteria in the soil to nitrous oxide that causes almost three hundred times more pollution than standard carbon dioxide.
Action Track: Electricity
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – Spread the Word About Energy Alternatives
§ What inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?
As Project Drawdown (2022) mentions:
The inspiration and wisdom that I can gather from my family, faith, and community traditions that would assist myself in communication and addressing the most pressing energy issues are the following: spreading the news about ways to save energy like utilizing a green roof to reduce energy consumption for their homes. Have people try to calculate their carbon footprint and make lifestyle changes to reduce their carbon footprints. Encourage people to join energy saving programs from their utilities that use cleaner energy or less energy. Have people connect with their local official to talk about the benefits of wind turbines and solar panels.
Electricity is a grouping of particles that are in motion through the flow of electrons that run all of one’s electronics. Electricity means having cooling, heating, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, and other necessities making life easier. People need to know that coal, oil, and gas in creation of electricity cause carbon dioxide to release into the atmosphere, which is bad for global warming. People need to improve efficiency by buying energy star certified power saving products and using the energy saving settings of their electronics. People need to build their homes with better insulation, so they save on heating and cooling loses as well. All lighting for businesses, governments, and homes should be Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) because they save on heat generation and power generation.
Thank you for reading my week ten blog post number seven on the eco-challenge reflection questions.

Carmine Salamone 3/27/2022 9:46 AMHello Professor Sheridan,
The following is my week eight blog post number six on the eco-challenge reflection questions.
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – Going for A Daily Walk
Action Track: Healing & Renewal- What have you noticed on your daily walks?
Going on a daily walk for ten minutes each day made me notice the beauty of the nature surrounding my area. It made me realize also that walking to a store instead of driving could reduce my own carbon footprint. If a store is closer, I could walk there instead of starting my vehicle, warming it up if it is cold or cooling it down if it is hot, then driving there. If the store is close enough, I will not only reduce my carbon footprint, but it might also save me some time from that mentioned process. It is also noticeability better for my health to walk to a local store than drive there because you will get exercise and support local business, while also helping the environment.- What have you enjoyed?
The most enjoyable part about taking a daily walk for ten minutes each day is the mindfulness it brings. The walking time allows decompression and time for the brain to relax and recalibrate the senses from over stimulation by the electronic devices we are all tethered to daily now. The walking time also allows for enjoying of the realization that we are sharing this community with many animals as well. It is essential to renew ourselves by taking these brief ten-minute walks and enjoy the beautiful planet we live on. It gives us a break from mentally and physically demanding workloads, which helps us reset our center within our own local environment by just stepping out to enjoy what it has to offer us.- What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
As Project Drawdown (2022) mentions:
The infrastructure changes that could make my walks more enjoyable and more possible are the following: the reduction of density of homes and workplaces. The reduction of the density of both homes and workplaces along with the increase of park areas will make walks more enjoyable from a nature point of view. The widening of walkways, addition of walkway lightening, planting of more trees/shrubs/flowers along walkways, clear pedestrian markings, and crosswalk signals would be excellent for enjoyment along with safety. Lastly, the improvement of mass transit connections to make mass transit easier to access for all would be of benefit.
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – Tend A Garden
Action Track: Healing & Renewal- Have you ever had a considerable experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus?
As Ecosystem Gardener (2022) mentions:
Yes, I have had a considerable experience in nature that altered my perspective and focus. Learning about gardening from my parents was eye opening because I learned that nature was truly the one providing my family with food. Tending to my family garden of fruits and vegetables is a lot of work but very worth it. In the height of the season, you enjoy all the work you did to get it to producing delicious fruits and vegetables right from your own backyard. Some pillars to follow when achieving a sustainable healthy garden for nature and oneself would be the following: maintain your garden with compost not fertilizer, maintain your garden with electric power tools or hand tools not gas power tools to reduce your carbon footprint, use your own food waste from vegetables/fruits along with dead plants/leaves as compost for your garden, collect the leaves as they fall off the trees and spread them evenly across your garden bed to keep it moist, keep leaves out of landfills, do not overwater your plants/trees/shrubs/lawn, provide a water supply like a bird bath for not only the birds but insects like butterflies, plant only local plants for the area that do well in local conditions, remove invasive non local species of plants which helps bring balance back to the local ecosystem and you will be happy with your garden along with the animals/insects in it.
Thank you for reading my week eight blog post number six on the eco-challenge reflection questions.

Carmine Salamone 3/16/2022 10:31 PMHello Professor Sheridan,The following is my blog post number five on Friedman’s Perspective.Friedman’s Perspective – The Triple Bottom LineResearch by Savitz and Weber (2014) supports:Milton Friedman’s skeptical business view was against sustainability. Friedman was an economist that theorized for the noninterventionist capitalism. Friedman liked to promote the short-term interests of businesses. Friedman also believed that the government stifled innovation through overregulation. Friedman believed that long-term sustainability practices were a distraction to maximizing profits for businesses. One of the uttermost perspectives of Freeman was that the act of philanthropy was wrong because shareholders of the business should be able to decide the way that the businesses spend their capital. Friedman’s view was that social responsibilities to the community were a waste of the manager’s time.Opportunities - YouTubeAs Pet Shop Boys (2009) mention:Friedman’s prospective on sustainability was reflected in the song “Opportunities” by the Pet Shop Boys. This was because the song is about making a lot of money, which Friedman was all about as a businessperson. The song is also about getting things fixed, which Friedman wants managers to fix issues that maximize profit. The song goes into the idea of being rich, which is reflective also of maximizing profits more than anything else in business. The song mentions education, which Friedman was educated and having educated mangers will increase profits for the business.Additionally, the song speaks about opportunities thus the name, which in any business to be successful the opportunities that come your way must be fully capitalized on. It also goes into having a partner that balances you and in business you need an excellent partner to succeed. Friedman like the song seemed to be centered around what is best for the business to make money in the short-term. Friedman like in the song was also not worried about the long-term money. If you have smart managers and they make the right decisions, you could have the opportunities to make money in business.Thank you for reading my blog post number five on the Friedman’s Perspective.Regards,CarmineReferences[Pet Shop Boys]. Carmine Salamone 3/06/2022 5:01 PMHello Professor Sheridan,
The following is my second blog post number three eco-challenge reflection questions.
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – Eat Mindfully
As Eco-Challenge (n.d.) mentions:
§ Action Track: Healing & Renewal
§ Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions.
§ How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
It is true that eating mindfully is healthier for us than eating with distractions because you will tend to have less food waste. When you are not eating mindfully you are increasing food waste because you are not paying attention to what you are eating and potentially eating more than you need to. Also, if you are not mindful when you are eating, you may experience weight gain because you are eating in excess due to distractions by your phone, computer, television, or newspaper. Eating without this distraction and eating with mindfulness can help reduce your weight potentially and make you feel healthier. Feeling healthier is better for your mind and your body.
As Feed Your Potential Mentions (n.d.) mentions:
The current culture wants us on our mobile devices all day every day because people want to be connected socially all the time and work wants us to connect to emails all the time. Taking breaks from your mobile devices on the social and work front provides you with much needed mental relaxation. This form of eating is healthier and with electronic devices removed, you can focus on the enjoyment of your meal and the in-person company. If you are very distracted, you might finish your plate of food without real enjoyment of the food itself. Eating while distracted you may eat more throughout your entire day focusing on your electronic device and not the food you are ingesting.
These are some helpful steps I have learned about in this helpful article:
1. Starting with just one mindful meal per day: this eases the demand to keep yourself from your electronic devices and makes the changes easier on you and your accustomed eating habits.2. Avoid eating out of the packaging: this stops you from eating the whole package and keeps you mindful of serving sizes if you just put a serving of a snack in a bowl.3. Meal prepping ahead of time: this is excellent because it makes mindful eating easier as you already made your meals and are eating a fixed amount to stay healthy.4. Make sure to enjoy a guilt free cheat distraction: if you enjoy reading the news make sure to enjoy it before you sit down to eat so you can mindfully eat and enjoy your meal.5. Recording caloric intake in food application: if you want to feel and look healthy, you can record your food intake into application that breaks down all the nutrient profiles for you during your mindful journey.6. Eating away from your workspace: it is much healthier and more mindful to eat away from your workspace where you can get into a clear headspace.7. Turn off electronic devices: set your do not disturb mode on all your devices and set some quite time for your meal to focus on the enjoyment of the meal itself.
Eco-Challenge Reflection Questions – More Fruits and Vegetables
As Eco-Challenge (n.d.) mentions:
§ Action Track: Healing & Renewal
§ How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Eating more fruits and vegetables, while eating less meat affects myself in a positive manner by making me feel more energized and less tired. After eating meals with substantial amounts of meat you feel sluggish and more tired versus when you eat vegetables only you feel like you still have energy to do errands. Eating more vegetables is better for my heart health since they have nutrients, minerals, and vitamins without the fat in meats. Eating additional cups of vegetables and fruits also provides an overall healthier diet with essential calories without the need to burn energy digesting items like meat. For the entire population and planet, eating more fruits and vegetables saves on water versus producing meat products.
As Durand (2020) mentions:
To make this health journey easier I will share ten recipes from this article about eating more vegetables and fruits:
1. One large banana, eight ounces of apple juice, and five cups of greens.2. One cup of blueberries, one cup of strawberries, one cup of coleslaw, six baby carrots, and one cup of kale.3. One cup of cantaloupe, one cup of grapes, one cup peas, one bell pepper, and one stalk of celery.4. Half a cup of cherries, one apple, and five cups of greens.5. One cup of cantaloupe, one cup of blueberries, two cups of greens, one cup of tomatoes, and one stalk of celery.6. One cup of cantaloupe, one cup of grapes, one cup of asparagus, one cup of kale, and half of a bell pepper.7. One cup of applesauce, one large banana, one bell pepper, half a cup of cucumber, and two cups of greens.8. One cup of strawberries, one orange, one cup of tomatoes, one stalk of celery, and one cup of kale.9. One nectarine, half a cup of cherries, one cup of cucumbers, half a cup of carrots, and one cup of kale.10. One cup of cantaloupe, one apple, one cup of coleslaw, one bell pepper, and one stalk of celery.
All these vegetables and fruit-based meals give you what you need in once meal in terms of nutrients like your vitamins or minerals you want from a meal. These are balanced options that make it easier to eat healthy for us and the planet. These meals that are based on healthy fruits and vegetables can be meal prepped ahead of time to make healthy eating easier. The planet itself and the people on this planet will be better off if more people eat less meat and more fruits and vegetables.

Carmine Salamone 2/24/2022 7:34 PMHello Professor Sheridan,
The following is my second blog post on my six daily Eco-challenge action choices.
My six Eco-Challenge Daily Action Choices
As Arthsastra (2015) mentions:
1. Action Track of Healing and Renewal: Going for a daily walk for ten minutes each day to take in all the nature makes this task more enjoyable. This may be hard if the weather is bad and not conducive to walking. This is excellent for taking in all that nature provides to us and taking time to appreciate it and decompress from technology or a stressful day.
2. Action Track of Healing and Renewal: Making sure to eat more fruits and vegetables to ensure excellent heart health with the addition of at least one cup of vegetables or fruits per day until I am at a full four cups per day of vegetables and fruits. This may be hard if I run out of fruits or vegetables, but I can go to the store to get more if other shopping is necessary to reduce my carbon footprint. This increase of vegetables and fruits will fill me on healthy foods that support local sustainable farmers.
3. Action Track of Healing and Renewal: Striving to eat more mindfully by being less distracted by electronic devices while I eat my daily meals. Eating while having less distraction will keep your focused on eating only until you are not hungry anymore, which helps to save food and overeating. The issue that arises is if you do not have enough time and need to multitask while eating your meals.
4. Action Track of Healing and Renewal: Seasonally, I will strive to tend to my garden each day in the most sustainable way possible. The issue is if it is snowing you cannot tend to your garden and will have to wait for spring. As soon as the weather warms up, I can plant flowers to assist the bees in their cross-pollination efforts.
5. Action Track of Electricity: Spreading the word about energy alternatives to at least one person a day. To accomplish this, I could speak to at least one person a day about the benefits of alternative energy like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, or methane digester. The hard part is if they do not want to hear about the benefits, I will have to research excellent talking points for all differing viewpoints.
6. Action Track of Food, Agriculture, and Land Use: Supporting organic growing methods by purchasing organic cotton and organic food, when possible, within my shopping budget for the products. The issue could be if it is not within my budget for some products. The solution would be to save money on products without organic offering to make the purchase of those with organic offerings.
Thank you for reading my second blog post on my six daily Eco-challenge action choices.

Carmine Salamone 2/17/2022 7:37 PMHello Professor Sheridan and fellow classmates,
The following is my blog introduction on a more sustainable lifestyle.
Sustainable Lifestyle
As ecochallengedotorg. (n.d.). mentions:
Hello everyone, my name is Carmine, and I am excited to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. In the past, I have unknowingly participated in the electricity action category. This category of action plans involves improving efficiency, shifting manufacturing, and refining the system. I contributed to the EcoLeaner level activity by choosing LED lightbulbs in the past. Choosing LED lightbulbs or LED lighting fixtures over incandescent lightbulbs or incandescent fixtures saves energy. The best lightbulbs to get are the Energy Star-certified ones. These Energy Star-certified lightbulbs can save you up to fourteen dollars per light fixture annually.
During the semester, I would like to research more about alternate energy sources. Energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters seem remarkably interesting to me. Informing people about energy alternatives and the benefits sounds very fulfilling. Letting people know about other than traditional means of energy and electrical solutions is overly exciting. Telling one person a day about these renewable energy sources for electric is my current goal.
In the action track for healing and renewal, they share information on how nature heals a community for a world that is shared better. Currently, I am adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet in the EcoLearner level. This addition of one cup of fruits and vegetables will eventually lead me reaching the goal of four cups of fruits and vegetables per day. Also, I used to go for daily walks in my local park, which checked off two of these health and renewal actions in the EcoLearner level of going for daily walks and exploring my area. Now that the weather is warming up, I am looking forward to getting back to these activities.
Thank you for reading my blog introduction on a more sustainable lifestyle.
