Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

It was an interesting experience making the switch to distraction-free meal time. Although I am someone who has grown up with technology, I did not realize how much I truly use it. I would always found myself searching mindlessly for shows or videos to watch on Netflix, Youtube and other social media platforms. Forcing myself to enjoy meals without them took a short adjustment period but I honestly enjoyed it. I felt as though I had a better experience and was able to actually appreciate the meal that I am fortunate enough to have. Research on the topic says "Fundamentally, mindful eating involves: eating slowly and without distraction. listening to physical hunger cues and eating only until you're full. distinguishing between true hunger and non-hunger triggers for eating" (healthline). Experimenting with mindfulness has helped avoid over-indulgence. Too much of anything can be a bad thing so knowing when your body has had enough is important to maintaining good health and positive feelings and attitudes.

What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

    Jazmin Sanchez's avatar

Some easy low-cost ways to reduce water usage at home include only using the dishwasher when it fully loaded, finding and fixing faucet leaks immediately, installing low-flow showerheads, and not letting the water run while brushing teeth, doing hair etc. There is a variety of ways in which we can conserve water and it is something we should all practice. Reducing water usage can help you save money and utilize less water from "rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep the environment healthy" (energystar.gov). An interesting piece of information I learned is that conserving water saves energy. "Energy is needed to filter, heat and pump water to your home, so reducing your water use also reduces your carbon footprint" (wildelifetrusts). There are many ways we can contribute to the betterment of our planets health, what seems like a small act can have significant impacts.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Jazmin Sanchez's avatar
    Jazmin Sanchez 3/19/2023 8:16 PM
According to some research, people in richer countries eat more meat because "meat consumption is associated with affluence, leading to excessive consumption to make up for experienced scarcity or to differentiate from the poor" (Garentt, Wilkes, 2014). Meat consumption, historically, has always been associated with actions of the upper class to set themselves apart, it is a sign of self improvement. However, eating meat has negative repercussions on our bodies and our planet. Meat production for consumption is responsible for the release harmful greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Those of which include, CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. This then adds on to the growing concerns of climate change and global warming. In order to obtain the meat, fields are cleared for livestock and an abundance of trees are cut down to make the space. If this isn't enough to scare someone, it might also be helpful to know that constant consumption of red meat can lead to serious, life threating health conditions such as diabetes and a variety of cardiovascular diseases.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I don't necessarily believe that my transportation choices affect my community engagement. I have not noticed a change in how I interact with my community by choosing to walk over driving. As just one person making a change with my choice it is not enough to solve the environmental damage created by cars but it is just one small step in making a difference. I do however notice a change in my experience and enjoyment depending how I travel. I have never really been a person who liked taking public transportation. The only time I ever really used it was in high school but my school was only about 8 minutes away by car and up to 30-45minutes by bus depending on the morning traffic and with 5 schools located within a few blocks from each other in my neighborhood, that traffic was awful. My enjoyment significantly declines with this choice. But, I can get a similar enjoyment as I do driving by walking as long as I have my headphones and I can still enjoy my music. By walking I have more of an opportunity to really look at my surroundings and enjoy what's around me.

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Jazmin Sanchez's avatar

After choosing this challenge, I took the time to do some research about different ways to practice the five R's. One thing that I learned, and that I have begun to implement into my routine, is visiting refill centers for different products. Rather than making constant repurchases to things like laundry detergent, hand soaps, and grocery items that come in wasteful amounts of plastic packaging, an alternative is to refill those products at a store you bring your own container to. This is a step towards leading a zero-waste and sustainable lifestyle. Not only is this helpful to the environment, but it also gives me design choice freedom. I can put my products in containers that fit my taste, its small but satisfying.

As of now, there are 6 sustainability practices I have chosen. I have made these choices because I feel as though they are small but doable and mindful steps I can make that will hopefully foster much more. I think its important to start small as one small step is still a step.
Potential challenges I think I will face are finding alternate transportation solutions. I have never been one for public transit or walking far distances. I usually always use my car for my trips so getting used to not using it will be a different experience. Another challenge I foresee myself facing are correctly following the 5 R's. I have always been the kind of person who recycled the best way I know how which is simply separating my garbage from plastics to regular. But, I think there could be other, more tedious steps to take in order to be more effective. Finding ways to repurpose items, for example, will force me to be creative.

    Hello,

My name is Jazmin and this is my first in-depth course about sustainability in business practice. So far, I have really learned about the importance of sustainability and that it is not only to protect and profit business but also to protect the environment. Businesses have a responsibility to help preserve our planet as much as we do.

There are a few things I can say that I do to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. For one, I own a car and drive a good amount and as we all know this is harmful for the environment. But, one small change I have tried making recently is using it only when I really need it. For example if the place I need to go to is not very far, I will walk instead. Additionally, I will usually pick one day to complete multiple trips rather than spreading them out over more than one day throughout the week. I also make sure to always recycle and limit my use of plastics. Whenever I go shopping, I make sure to bring a reusable bag so that I won't need to use the plastic bags that some stores continue to offer.

However, I think there is a lot more that I could do to improve and prioritize sustainability in my life and I am eager to learn about the changes I can make.

      Hi Jazmin,

Like you, I also utilize reusable bags when I go shopping. I always keep a few in the car just in case I do unplanned shopping and don't have to buy more plastic. One day I had a few bags that ripped and I did not know what to do with them because I did not want to throw away more plastic into the trash, so I re-purpose them and used them to plant my vegetable garden that summer and ever since they have been the home of my basil plants.
