REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Walker Sanders 12/11/2020 11:36 AMI had heard of the term before, but did not understand what it meant very well. I think that all of the benefits of silvopasture are important, but the most important one is the farm being able to have healthy livestock, forest, and help the planet all at the same time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Walker Sanders 12/04/2020 9:19 AMFamily planning is very important for preventing unplanned pregnancies, reducing abortion rates and making it less likely for young people to have children when they are not ready. In some places, people need to be educated on the subject. In other places, people may need help obtaining things such as birth control. This is a very important topic that needs to reach everyone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Walker Sanders 12/02/2020 6:37 AMYes, as I learn more about environmental issues, I am more likely to do something to make the situation better. I will do more to reduce my impact on the environment around me. feel overwhelmed when you hear the facts about how many ecosystems are actually unaltered by humans. I wish that this was a much higher number. The parts that make me feel hopeful is when I read the projected numbers about what could happen if we did something. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Walker Sanders 12/01/2020 6:25 AMTo protect the peat lands, we can avoid products with palm, oil in them, and use less paper. This will mean that less peat lands are being drained to be used for palm plantations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Walker Sanders 11/30/2020 7:38 AMWhen in poverty, it may be difficult for a woman to get a good education, or job. If she cannot get a job and needs help, she will not be able to participate and represent in her community. If a woman can get a good education and be independent, she can speak for herself, and help others who need it. It is also very helpful to have a good role model. If you don’t have a good role model, it is harder to have a goal that you want to reach. If you do have a good role model, you have something to strive for and may end up being a role model for someone else. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Walker Sanders 11/30/2020 6:59 AMI am most concerned that even with all this new technology, we are still using old methods of doing things that are harmful to the planet. For example, mountaintop removal and coal mining are all still happening even though we have better ways to get energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Explore Other Food, Agriculture, and Land Use SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Walker Sanders 11/24/2020 7:07 AMI learned that meat and dairy are a big factor in deforestation. The most interesting fact I learned was that 33% of the land is used for livestock feed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Walker Sanders 11/23/2020 2:50 PMTo view expiration dates differently, I will not rely on the date to determine how good or bad the food is. Smell it, or taste it first. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Walker Sanders 11/20/2020 6:30 AMThese turbines can be installed anywhere, but they are most efficient when they are high up in a place with steady wind. This makes the tops of buildings a good place to put them. In Asheville, there are a lot of hotels. If wind turbines were put on some of the hotels, they could reduce the amount of fossil fuels burned. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Walker Sanders 11/19/2020 6:58 AMI had heard of biomass technology, but I didn’t know nearly as much as I know now. I learned that there are three different ways to get biomass energy. I also learned that some ways used to get biomass energy are not efficient and can be harmful.
