  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

Eating lot of met effects our peeople, plants, and plant by produce and needing so much cow to produce cow  meet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/08/2020 8:13 AM
    1. No, I have not heard about Sliver Pastures before doing this Eco-Challenge assignment.
    2. After learning more about Sliver Pastures I think the biggest advantage they have is that It protects their  farmers from economic risk.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/07/2020 1:35 PM
what I learned about the climate impact of refrigerants is that  Refrigerants cause damage to the ozone layer and contribute to global warming, and while there have been some efforts to reduce the impact, a climate-friendly refrigerant is yet to be discovered.
I learn how do supermarkets contribute to this impact on refrigerants is by The average supermarket leaks about 25% of its total refrigerant load annually, and together, the roughly 38,000 supermarket locations in the United States emit over 130 million pounds (70 million tons) of CO2 equivalent emissions annually solely from refrigeration leaks.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/04/2020 1:50 PM
My vision for a sustainable community includes public transit, walk-able and bike-able communities, community and yard gardens where food is grown. For electricity production, My vision of a sustainable community has a blend of solar, micro-wind turbines and these methane dig-esters.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/03/2020 6:32 PM
I learned that you need to have family planning. Contraception allows them to leave  off having children until their bodies are fully able to develop  a pregnancy. It can also prevent women’s  pregnancy for elderly humans who face pregnancy-related challenges. Contraceptive use reduces the need for abortion by preventing not wanted pregnancies or miscarriage.

People in different places can have the same set of needs, but what could be different about women is that   if  they can not pay for the contraceptives to be on a birth control medication for women's health needs.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/02/2020 11:21 AM
The impact that it has on my thinking is,  That I need to start thinking climate change is a real thing in the world. The impact that it has on my actions is that I can reduce the amount of packets of Gum I chew or eat in  a day. The parts that feel overwhelming is that in the winter the upper climates can get down to about  -0 degrees in the winter time & when it snows. The parts that also feel overwhelming for  me is that during the winter time you do not really know what the weather is going to do.  In the cold months such as snow, rain, sleet, and hail. What makes me hopeful is that we can do something to help reduce our energy bill at home is to raise our thermostats in the summer and lower it in the winter. We have the power to reverse global warming. (we need to act now!).

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/01/2020 1:43 PM
I will continue to choose to share grown decaf coffee and reduce the amount of packets of gum I chew a day  (it has palm oil in it).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 12/01/2020 7:24 AM
The barriers women face are heath, education, and economic opportunities around the world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 11/24/2020 10:47 AM
Yes, my diet now is impacting deforestation by eating and chewing, such as (burgers, gum, mints, steak, etc). I can eat less meat and chew less gum. I can eat more plant based foods like Beyond burgers, (one of my favorite foods).

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Lily Schactman's avatar
    Lily Schactman 11/23/2020 12:23 PM
Yes I have heard of biomass technology before I did this assignment and Eco-Challenge, that used Biomass; such as( cars, planes, etc).
What surprised me about biomass is that Projects like Steven’s Croft and Blackburn Meadows are hugely important. And we’re proud of the impact that’s already being made. But this is only the beginning. Because as we’ve seen from the facts above, biomass energy can help us create more reliable, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly energy. And that’s what we all want to strive for.
