REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Ruby Schantz 12/10/2020 3:31 PMI learned that though they may seem helpful or were helpful, some of them ended up being bad for the environment. One way the supermarkets contribute to this impact is by advertising these products to us, with nothing but positive intent, which can hide the real issues behind them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Ruby Schantz 12/10/2020 2:48 PMI am concerned most about the amount of waste we produce and how high our carbon emissions are, because sooner than later there will be nothing left, as we are using up our natural resources at a much faster rate than we should be. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Ruby Schantz 12/08/2020 10:09 PMI believe I had heard the term be mentioned in past science classes, but I didn’t understand the true meaning and advantage. I think the biggest or most important advantage of silvopasture is that overall it positively impacts the environment, it’s land and living species. It is also economically beneficial to farmers and others in that area of work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Ruby Schantz 12/04/2020 3:05 PMMy vision of a sustainable community is where all the people have equal access to survival essentials such as food and other necessary items, and using solar power would also create an environmentally sustainable community. Something that would need to be changed for this vision to become a reality would be the economic values, in the hopes that we could eventually afford to fully switch to solar electricity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Ruby Schantz 12/03/2020 5:51 PMI learned that family planning is really important for women and families all across the world. The providence of free or low cost contraceptives to low-income or uninsured women is insanely needed, and should be prioritized. Pregnancy complications is a leading killer to young women and girls, and these issues need to be addressed and acted upon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Ruby Schantz 12/02/2020 10:09 AMAfter learning about the seriousness of environmental challenges that we face, I think my mindset has changed from “what have we done” to “what can we do” so I’m thinking more about ways of prevention and what we can do in the future to protect our environment. Something that’s overwhelming, besides the plain fact that we are damaging and killing our environment, is that there are still so many people that either don’t believe that what we are doing is harming our environment or that are not willing to educate themselves on these serious issues. The parts that make me feel hopeful is that there are several organizations that have made their mission to educate the people on our environmental issues, and to create resolutions and put effort into saving our planet. I also have hope in my generation, because I feel we have a clear understanding of what is going on and how we need to take action so we can have a future, and I believe this is because we are actually living through it so it’s not necessarily new to us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Ruby Schantz 12/01/2020 6:54 PMI can stop supporting large corporations and businesses that use farming or fuel-extraction in the process of creating their content, and something that could be helpful to the environment is to start composting the foods that I can. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Ruby Schantz 11/30/2020 6:30 PMI believe that where I live and in my community, there is not a lot of barriers to my individual representation, but overall I feel it is hard especially for teen girls to get their voices heard. School dress codes are a really big part of the inequalities that we face, and our opinions don’t get enough recognition. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Explore Other Food, Agriculture, and Land Use SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Ruby Schantz 11/27/2020 3:01 PMI found out that deforestation has a super huge impact on the environment, and I also was informed of specific labels to look for that will tell me how environmentally friendly a product is. One of the most interesting facts that I learned was that palm oil is in so many of the foods I eat, such as M&M's (my fav candy) which I didn't really expect. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Ruby Schantz 11/23/2020 10:58 AMIt empowers me to make better decisions, because I'll be able to use my knowledge to understand when a product should be bought vs when it should be used for best outcome, and for how long it should be/should've been displayed.
