Materials
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Materials
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Food
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Sarah Schott 7/05/2020 12:57 PMWe are usually very conservative with our food. We eat leftovers and have instilled that value in our children. But this week we ended up throwing away food, and I felt terrible. it was take-out food. The food did not taste that great, it was highly caloric, one of the items turned bad quickly and made my husband ill, and we realized that the staff packing up the food had not worn masks. Still, it is guilt inducing to throw food away. I think that it is much easier to throw away food you do not make yourself. Which does not mean you should not go out and eat, but you should be frugal with your order, especially when you are ordering take-out and cannot ask questions before you order.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Sarah Schott 5/05/2020 8:29 AMI feel so much better having smaller portions and it is good for keeping in shape too-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Sarah Schott 4/22/2020 5:44 PMI think meat has always been seen as the food of the wealthy. Factory farming in the US made it plentiful and everyone thought they had to eat meat - it was THE protein in the food pyramid. But meat production is harmful to the environment, especially when it is done in a factory farm. And personally, I feel better when I do not eat meat, both physically and mentally.-

Adam Schule 7/19/2022 9:04 AMRecycling lessens the requirement for raw material harvesting. People who live close to woods or near river systems are also displaced due to our growing need for these basic commodities. Recycling lessens the likelihood of causing harm to someone else's property or neighborhood. You can full article here or see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgxGL3jHgcg
